7 My year in Namibia I worked with children and young people from ages 6 right up to 17, who lived altogether in a School far away from their parents. Can you imagine having to sleep over and school during the week AND the weekend? So why did I do it? Saw incredible scenery and fascinating places, I hadn’t travelled much further than my village in Scotland before! Made friends from all over the world – Germany, South Africa, Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, UK… Learned about their life and told them about mine. Experienced life immersed in another culture over the course of an entire year. Christmas in shorts and t-shirts, festivals, traditions. Worked with amazing children, who, despite some their horrible pasts, carried on smiling all the time, making me appreciate how lucky I really was and making me smile every day. Had fun! Despite not having any money, living on different food, I have never been happier and would recommend volunteering to anyone.

35 Discuss in groups: What are the positives and negatives of importing food from other countries to the UK?

36 Which strawberries would you buy?
Everyday value £1.75 400g Sweet and juicy strawberries £2.00 400g Morocco Wales

37 What about bananas? Bananas need hot weather (26-30°C)
Frost kills banana plants Any guesses where we buy bananas from?

38 Bad bananas? Bananas mainly grown in developing countries
Workers on banana plantations work long hours, don’t get paid very much, and handle dangerous chemicals without protection. Buying bananas could fuel greedy owners to exploit their workers more as demand increases But you do have a choice!

39 Fairtrade bananas The Fairtrade Foundation ensures that workers in poor conditions receive better working conditions by making sure they get enough money. Their knowledge helps farms improve productivity and quality of life of their workers. They encourage sustainable practices for long term development of plantations.

40 Sustainable – what does this mean?

41 WHAT FAIRTRADE DOES Better Prices Decent Working Conditions
Fair Treatment Supporting the development of farming and worker communities Providing control to farmers Protecting the environment

42 Other Fairtrade benefits to workers

46 If you buy products with this symbol you will be:
