What languages are in our schools?

Who receives ELD service?
Students who have a language other than English Students with American Indian or Alaskan Native heritage Parents provide the school with this information on the Registration card, Or students are give an English language test.

What are the levels? Newcomer Beginning Early Intermediate
Early Advanced Advanced

Newcomer/ Beginning Student is new to US schools and/or student has a language score of 0 to 1

Early Intermediate Student has a language score of 1 to 2

Intermediate Student demonstrates a language score of 2 to 3

Early Advanced Student has a language score of 3 to 4

Advanced Student has a language score of 4 to 5

How are ELD classes taught?

What support is available outside of the ELD classroom?
SIOP and GLAD Bilingual Assistant Core Content teachers trained in English language instruction Native Language Support (El Puente, Riverside, Alder Creek)

How is an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) different from English Language Development (ELD)?
ELD is not Special Education If the student is on an IEP, the ELD Specialist and the Special Education teacher will work together and find the best instruction.

What happens when students reach the advanced level?
When a student reaches the advanced level, a team of ELD Specialists review the student’s academic reading, writing, listening and speaking in English. If the team decides that the student has advanced language, the student stops taking ELD classes.

How do we make sure the student is succeeding without ELD support?
For two full school years, the progress of the student will be monitored and reviewed. If a student is struggling, the school team will determine how to support the student. This may include reentering the ELD program.

What are some ways parents can be involved with the school?
Attend school events Volunteer at the school/home Chaperone field trips Join the PTA/PTO/PTSA

What are some ways parents can help their student learn?
Ask compelling questions about school Encourage reading at home Make sure homework is finished daily Be connected with the teachers Encourage Native Language at home!!!
