1 The Risk Of STIs Health Mr. Christman

2 The Risks Of STIs Objectives:
Examine the role alcohol and drugs play in relation to HIV/AIDS and STDs Discuss the benefits of abstinence as it relates to the prevention of STDs

3 The Risks Of STIs Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): infectious diseases spread from person to person through sexual contact

4 The Risks Of STIs: Epidemic
Epidemic: an occurrence of diseases in which many people in the same place at the same time are affected Today in the United States, we are facing and epidemic of STDs. An estimated 65 million people in the United States are living with an incurable STD.

5 The Risks Of STIs: Epidemic
Many of these cases go undiagnosed and untreated for 2 main reasons: Many people are asymptomatic (without symptoms) Even when STDs are diagnosed, they may not be reported to health departments so contacts can be notified and treated.

6 The Risks Of STIs: High-Risk Behaviors
In the United States teens make up one quarter of the estimated 1.5 million new cases of STDs every year. This is because teens are participating in more high-risk behaviors than ever.

7 The Risks Of STIs: High-Risk Behaviors
High-risk behaviors include: 1) Being sexually active with more than one person: most teens are unaware of a partner’s past behavior and whether he or she already has an STD

8 The Risks Of STIs: High-Risk Behaviors
2) Engaging in unprotected sex: even protected sex is not 100 percent effective Abstinence from sex is the only 100 percent effective method in preventing STDs.

9 The Risks Of STIs: High-Risk Behaviors
3) Selecting high-risk partners: such partners include those with a history of being sexually active with more than one person and those who have injected illegal drugs.

10 The Risks Of STIs: High-Risk Behaviors
4) Using alcohol and drugs: Alcohol use can lower inhibitions. A recent survey showed that more than 25 percent of teens who engaged in sexual activity had been under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

11 The Risks Of STIs: Consequences
Most people, including teens, are not fully aware of the consequences of STDs. These are serious infections that can dramatically change the course of a person’s life.

12 The Risks Of STIs: Consequences
Some STDs are incurable such as herpes and AIDS. These diseases will remain in your body for the rest of your life.

13 The Risks Of STIs: Consequences
2) Some STDs cause cancer: The hepatitis B virus can cause liver cancer. The human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cancer of the cervix. These diseases also cannot be cured and will be in your body forever.

14 The Risks Of STIs: Consequences
3) Some STDs can cause complications that affect the ability to reproduce: STDs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which damages the organs and can cause sterility.

15 The Risks Of STIs: Consequences
4) STDs can be passed from an infected mother to a child before, during, or after birth: STDs can damage the bones, nervous system, and brain of a fetus. Also, premature births can result, and infants infected with STDs can easily become blind or develop pneumonia or even die.

16 The Risks Of STIs: Abstinence
If you have sexual contact with another person, you put yourself at risk of being infected with an STD. Abstinence is the only 100 percent way of not being infected. Abstinence: the deliberate decision to avoid harmful behaviors
