Today in the United States, we are facing and epidemic of STDs.
An estimated 65 million people in the United States are living with an incurable STD.

Many of these cases go undiagnosed and untreated for 2 main reasons:
Many people are asymptomatic (without symptoms)
Even when STDs are diagnosed, they may not be reported to health departments so contacts can be notified and treated.

In the United States teens make up one quarter of the estimated 1.5 million new cases of STDs every year.
This is because teens are participating in more high-risk behaviors than ever.

1) Being sexually active with more than one person: most teens are unaware of a partner’s past behavior and whether he or she already has an STD

Abstinence from sex is the only 100 percent effective method in preventing STDs.

A recent survey showed that more than 25 percent of teens who engaged in sexual activity had been under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.

2) Some STDs cause cancer: The hepatitis B virus can cause liver cancer. The human papillomavirus (HPV) can cause cancer of the cervix. These diseases also cannot be cured and will be in your body forever.

3) Some STDs can cause complications that affect the ability to reproduce: STDs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which damages the organs and can cause sterility.

4) STDs can be passed from an infected mother to a child before, during, or after birth: STDs can damage the bones, nervous system, and brain of a fetus.
Also, premature births can result, and infants infected with STDs can easily become blind or develop pneumonia or even die.

If you have sexual contact with another person, you put yourself at risk of being infected with an STD. Abstinence is the only 100 percent way of not being infected.
