2 Is there a problem and what is it? How can we help?

3 1 in 4 teens in the United States gets an STD each year.
Three-quarters of a million teens between the ages of 15 and 19 become pregnant each year. Teens who become pregnant are less likely to finish high school or attend college. Taken from 1 in 4 teens in the United States gets an STD each year. By age 25 half of all sexually active young adults have or will have had an STD. 8 Core Strategy 1: EDUCATION:
Provide comprehensive & age appropriate evidence-based and medically accurate sexuality education to promote healthy sexual behaviors.

9 Why a school setting? Information in an evidence based curriculum is already part of the mandated HIV education Information will reach a larger audience during classroom instruction as compared to voluntary afterschool or group setting

“Be Proud! Be Responsible” has been reviewed for alignment with Health Education Standards and Skills by the New York State Center for School Safety. We have provided the curriculum grids in the presentation packets.

Be Proud! Be Responsible! Evidence-Based Curriculum addresses these key elements… Information surrounding HIV/AIDS, STDs and pregnancy prevention The perception of invulnerability Attitudes and beliefs that facilitate participating in HIV risk-associated behaviors. Cognitive skills to analyze situations that put people at risk Negotiation/refusal skills Technical skills to use condoms correctly A sense of self-efficacy The sense of pride and responsibility in acquiring and practicing HIV-prevention behaviors

12 Be Proud! Be Responsible! Six modules include…
Introduction to HIV, STDs and Pregnancy Building Knowledge About HIV, STDs and Pregnancy Understanding Vulnerability to HIV, STDs and Teen Pregnancy Attitudes and Beliefs About HIV, AIDS, and Safer Sex Building Condom Use Skills Building Negotiation and Refusal Skills *Original structure is six 50 minute modules but can be modified to fit other class period lengths.

13 Outcomes… Reduces risky sexual attitudes and behaviors
Higher frequency of condom use Delays initiation of sexual activity and increases protective behaviors

14 How We Support You… Provide education, information, assistance and support Provide free use of the curriculum and materials Provide feedback on statewide outcomes of EBC use and best practices

15 What’s the catch? Provide free use of the curriculum to the District*
Present with Fidelity (within the framework of school guidelines) Record cycle attendance and maintain provided Fidelity Checklist (No student identifiers are associated with these forms) *Contingent on Signing of Letter of Agreement between District and HHHN that EBC will be presented with fidelity.
