Changing Mindsets What is wrong with this person? vs. What has this person been through?

3 Current Research “About 30% of girls and 20% of boys --- totaling 6.3 million teens --- have had an anxiety disorder – according to data from the National Institute of Mental Health.” “We’re the first generation that cannot escape our problems at all, “ says Faith-Ann. “We’re all like little volcanoes. We’re getting this constant pressure , from our phones, from our relationships, from the way things are today.” “Being a teenager today is a draining full-time job that includes doing schoolwork, managing a social-media identity and fretting about career, climate change, sexism, racism – you name it.” Schrobsdorff, Susanna. “The Kids Are Not All Right.” Newsweek. November 7, 2016. Failing is not always failure

4 The ACEs Study Kaiser and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) decided to study the physical impact of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). They surveyed over 17,000 adult Kaiser members with a 10 question survey. The survey asked about events surrounding: violence, sexual abuse, neglect, and family dysfunction that happened during childhood. For every “yes” answer the patient got a point (an ACE) with 10 points being the highest. Relax - listen to your soul

5 they would have problems with: Alcoholism and alcohol abuse
The higher the ACEs score the more child stress the patient experienced and the more likely they would have problems with: Alcoholism and alcohol abuse Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) Depression Fetal death Health-related quality of life Illicit drug use Ischemic heart disease (IHD) Liver disease Risk for intimate partner violence Multiple sexual partners Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) Smoking Suicide attempts Unintended pregnancies Early initiation of smoking Early initiation of sexual activity Adolescent pregnancy Never forget about your passion

7 The Biology of Toxic Stress
Most of us have known for a long time that children growing up in highly stressful environments, without the proper support, lack many of the social and academic skills of a child who is not in that environment. Recent biological research is uncovering the pathology of the toxic stress. Wake up and be inspired

8 Remember that to overcome ACES:
Just as the brain can be harmed by negative experience, so too, may it be healed through positive experience. Develop safe, stable, and nurturing relationships Everyday is a second chance.

9 Biology of Toxic Stress
