1 from Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God
A sermon by Jonathan Edwards

2 Start a section in your notebook labeled “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”
Read p and answer the following in your notes: Describe Edwards’ early life and theological training. What was The Great Awakening, and how did Edwards contribute to it? What was Edwards’ downfall, and what did he do afterwards? What is a “sermon”? What makes for a good “oratory”? Define: omnipotent, ineffable, and dolorous

3 Listen to the Sermon… Do not take notes as the audio plays; however, pay attention to the following attributes. You will be asked to read the sermon and conduct a close read after the audio finishes: (Copy this list into your notes) Imagery Figurative language- metaphors, similes, personification Diction & Tone- How do the author’s words express his feelings? Author’s purpose- What was Edwards trying to accomplish?

4 Personification, 1st para: “Hell’s wide gaping mouth open”
Use this exemplar for your close read notes. I did paragraph #1 for you. Find one example of strong rhetoric, and analyze its effect in the sermon. Imagery & diction, 1st para:“dreadful pit of the glowing flames of the wrath of God” Reference to Hell is juxtaposed with the mention of God; defies expectations that God is forgiving/compassionate Word choice sets up an intimidating tone/fearful mood Personification, 1st para: “Hell’s wide gaping mouth open” Giving Hell human (yet monster-like) qualities intensifies the fearful mood

5 Ticket Out: Based on your annotations, explain what Edwards’ PURPOSE was in his sermon.
