Buddhist dharma took people away from priests’ control Gautama objected to animal sacrifice Hope for all Caste system rejected ALL life respected

4 Eightfold Path Middle Path = Moderation Not too much or too little of anything Teaching Centered on Thought & Actions of People

5 Karma & Rebirth A person’s thoughts, speech, & actions during their lifetime = karma All good and bad karma travel with a person into the next world…therefore, karma = rebirth Instead of a soul or personality traveling with a person from one life to the next, it is their karma that “travels” Life is continual change / don’t try to hold on to life or personality or it will cause suffering “Go with the flow” (Do you recall this term?)

6 Buddhist Tradition Has Three Parts  The Three Jewels
Jewel 1 = Buddha Jewel 2 = dharma (the law) Jewel 3 = religious community = sangha Buddhism moved from India to China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Burma, and other parts of Southeast Asia.

7 A GREAT Buddhist Ruler Look at pages 239 & 240 in the textbook. Let’s read silently, then pick out critical points.
