3 ~About Kagoshima Operation~
ANA’s Daily Flight Routes Kagoshima ⇔ Tokyo (Haneda) ⇔ Osaka (Itami) ⇔ Nagoya ⇔ Okinawa (Naha) ANA group operates 50 inbound and outbound flights every day. 9 airlines operate 166 inbound and outbound flights every day.

4 ~About Kagoshima Operation~
The runway direction of Kagoshima airport is 16/34, and ILS facility is equipped in runway 34 side. Pilot and dispatchers are requested to select appropriate route by using latest information.

5 ~Volcanic ash avoidance route~
GODAI arrival is one of major STARs to avoid ash drifting north-east side from Sakura-jima. Pilot can request desired route based on his judge that a cleared route or a route to be cleared is inappropriate because of volcanic ash etc..

6 ~Operations near the active volcano~
“The most important point in the operations with volcanic ash is 『AVOIDANCE』” → Written in Airplane Operations Manual (AOM). We can not see or detect it in clouds or at night-time. Dispatchers and Pilots use following resources in the operation. Upper wind (around Sakura-jima) forecast data from JMA. Company airport report informed by Kagoshima STC. Explosion detection system in Kagoshima STC. JMA: Japan Meteorological Agency STC: Station Control / Operation Office

7 ~Information flow about Sakura-jima volcano~
Volcanic information Kagoshima weather station Pilot Report Sakurajima INFO ATC ANA Kagoshima STC Other ANA office Captain Pilots are requested to report ATC or STC, when they find volcanic smoke that affect flight safety. Kagoshima STC is requested to report to other sections immediately when he get volcanic information from Kagoshima weather station.

The ash column of Sakurajima reaches about 6,000ft in average, and sometimes exceeds 10,000ft.

10 ~Maintenance Experience~
More than 30 years of operation in Kagoshima Airport, ANA has not experienced significant damages or problems for both engines and airframes due to volcanic ash from Sakura-jima. Based on observation by Kagoshima Airport Meteorological Station, falling volcanic ash in Kagoshima airport has been reported for 67 days in 15 years from to Unfortunately, actual quantity of falling ash has not been counted. ANA’s 864 flights were operated (landings and take-offs) in the affected date and time. Scheduled engine borescope inspections, engine overhauls and airframe inspections proved no significant damages or problems due to volcanic ash fall.

11 ~Maintenance Experience~
Falling ash date and time for last 15 years

12 ~Maintenance Experience~
For your reference, Kagoshima local Meteorological Observatory (11 kilomters (7 miles) west from Sakurajima) has monitored quantity of falling ash.

13 ~Operations near the active volcano~
ANA strongly believes that Our operational experiences around Sakura-jima should be considered carefully to establish new guidelines and/or rules in ICAO Task Force. Study for Sakura-jima is essential to establish new guidelines and a good opportunity since the volcano is still active and live.
