4 Samples of Three Types of Rocks

5 Types of Igneous Rocks Igneous rocks are formed when magma or lava cools and hardens (gets solid) 2 TYPES Intrusive and Extrusive Intrusive MAGMA COOLS SLOWLY BENEATH EARTH’S SURFACE LARGER CRYSTALS COARSE GRAINED (TEXTURE) Extrusive LAVA COOLS QUICKLY ON THE SURFACE SMALLER CRYSTALS FINE GRAINED (TEXTURE) Granite Basalt

6 The Story of the Rock Determines What Type of Rock it Will Become
All types of rocks can be chnged into Igneous rock by melting and cooling deep inside the Earth. All types of rocks can be changed into sedimentary rock by weathering, erosion, sediments, compacting and cementing together on the Earth’s surface. All types of rocks can be changed into metamorphic rock by heat and pressure within the Earth.

7 Igneous Rock Igneous [(ig-nee-uhs)] Rocks formed by the cooling and solidifying of molten materials. Igneous rocks can form beneath the Earth’s surface, or at its surface, as lava.

9 Sedimentary Rocks Sedimentary rocks are formed on the Earth’s surface from weathering and erosion of other rocks. These rocks are compacted and cemented together into solid rock. 3 TYPES ORGANIC FOSSILIZED REMAINS OF PLANTS OR ANIMALS CLASTIC FRAGMENTS OF OTHER ROCK ARE COMPACTED TOGETHER CHEMICAL SEDIMENTS ARE “GLUED” TOGETHER BY DISSOLVED MINERALS -TEXTURE IS DETERMINED BY THE SIZE OF PARTICLES OF SEDIMENT

10 Sedimentary Rock Sedimentary [(sed-uh- men -tuh-ree)]
Rock that has formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment, especially sediment transported by water (rivers, lakes, and oceans), ice (glaciers), and wind . Sedimentary rocks are often deposited in layers, and frequently contain fossils.

13 Three Main Types of Sedimentary Rock
Clastic- pieces of other rocks cemented together Chemical- dissolved and dried out from other rocks Organic- from organisms

14 Metamorphic Rock Metamorphic Sedimentary or igneous rock
altered by great heat or  pressure, e.g. limestone  changed to marble.

17 There are two types of metamorphic rocks 1
There are two types of metamorphic rocks 1. Foliated metamorphic rocks have their grains arranged in parallel layers or bands. Examples are slate, schist, and gneiss. 2. Nonfoliated rocks have grains that are randomly arranged. Common examples are marble and quartzite.

18 Metamorphic Rocks Formed when existing rock is changed into new rock by the heating of the rock and pressure from other rocks around it. 2 Types of Metamorphic Rock Foliated Crystals are in layers Non-Foliated Crystals are random

20 The Rock Story The Rock Cycle tells the story of the changes that rocks under go. No two rocks are alike. Each rock has its’ own story to tell. Can you tell that story?
