1 SATs Information Meeting
Year 2

2 Aims of the session To share important information about SATs.
To answer any questions about KS1 SATs. Discuss / share ideas about how you can help your child at home.

3 What are KS1 SATs? Standard Assessment Tests (SATs).
All children have to be tested before they go to into Key Stage 2 (Year 3). They provide assessment information (successes and challenges). Purpose – to judge whether each child is working at the expected standard.

4 Can my child fail a SATs test. NO
Can my child fail a SATs test? NO! It is important that children understand they are not going to 'pass' or 'fail' the test - it will just show what they have learnt and what they can do. Children have already been practising and preparing for these tests.

5 Key stage 1 tests Each pupil will receive:
a raw score (number of raw marks awarded) a scaled score confirmation of whether or not they attained the national standard Scaled scores maintain their meaning over time so that two pupils achieving the same scaled score on two different tests will have demonstrated the same attainment. For example, on our scale 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’. However, due to the small differences in difficulty between tests, the ‘raw score’ (ie the total number of correct responses) that equates to 100 might be different (though similar) each year. A pupil’s scaled score will be based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test, based on the number of questions they answered correctly. The pupil’s raw score will be translated into a scaled score using a conversion table.

6 The Tests KS1 SATs have to be carried out during May nationally but there are no set date – this is a school decision. The tests consist of: English reading Paper 1: combined reading prompt and answer booklet English reading Paper 2: reading booklet and reading answer booklet English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 1: spelling English grammar, punctuation and spelling Paper 2: questions Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic Mathematics Paper 2: reasoning There won’t be any test-based assessment of writing as part of the KS1 tests. This will be done through teacher assessment. We have been and continue to collect independent pieces of work to back this up. See last years papers online.

7 How to Help Your Child OXFORD OWL WEBSITE!!!!!
Listening to your child read can take many forms: First and foremost, focus developing an enjoyment and love of reading. Enjoy stories together – reading stories to your child is equally as important as listening to your child read. Read a little at a time but often, rather than rarely but for long periods of time! Talk about the story before, during and afterwards – discuss the plot, the characters, their feelings and actions, how it makes you feel, predict what will happen and encourage your child to have their own opinions. All reading is valuable – it doesn’t have to be just stories. Reading can involve anything from fiction and non-fiction, poetry, newspapers, magazines, football programmes, TV guides. Visit the local library - it’s free! OXFORD OWL WEBSITE!!!!!

16 How to Help Your Child First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage! Ensure your child is in school everyday and on time. Support your child with any homework tasks. Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise. Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion). Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast every morning! Have you tried Breakfast Club?
