Rapid Growth of Cities Main Idea: Industrialization, migration, and technology all contributed to the growth of American cities. urbanization - the rapid growth of a city population Farmers, immigrants, & African Americans migrate to cities seeking jobs & excitement Where were most of these cities? Steel bridges & “skyscrapers” accelerate urban growth Improved transportation allows upper & middle class Americans’ move to suburbs residential neighborhoods outside of downtown areas suburbs Santa Fe, New Mexico

Problems of Urban Life Main Idea: As cities grew, they faced a variety of problems, especially in the poorest neighborhoods. tenements = buildings divided into many tiny apartments NO windows, heat, indoor plumbing; often ten people living in a single room = High infant mortality rate Improving City Life: fire, police, sanitation depts., streetlights, Salvation Army, etc. settlement house – a center offering services to urban poor Founded by Jane Addams in 1889 College educated woman (rarity) “I was quite settled in my mind to study medicine and live with the poor.” Jane Addams Jane Addams founder of the Hull Settlement House in Chicago, Illinois

5 Sports After the Civil War attending sporting events became very popular Most popular: Baseball 1st professional baseball team: Cincinnati Red Stockings (1869). 1891- James Naismith invents basketball! Football was also popular and dangerous. No helmets Dr. James Naismith
