Problems of Urban Life
Main Idea: As cities grew, they faced a variety of problems, especially in the poorest neighborhoods.
tenements = buildings divided into many tiny apartments
NO windows, heat, indoor plumbing; often ten people living in a single room = High infant mortality rate
Improving City Life: fire, police, sanitation depts., streetlights, Salvation Army, etc.
settlement house – a center offering services to urban poor

Department stores: consumers can buy all their goods in different sections of one store
Macy’s becomes one of the 1st department stores in the U.S.
Long work hours make people value leisure time
Cities open parks, museums, orchestras, art galleries, zoos, gardens, and theaters
