5 Congratulations! The numbers are in!
Membership Update Congratulations!  The numbers are in! As a state, we have increased our membership by 11% (178 members)!  Most chapters had an increase in membership!  We dropped 174 members from the September 2016 report to the December 2016 report, likely due to the audit process. Please remember to keep your numbers updated throughout the year! Continue to send membership updates to Nicole Hall

Core Leadership Areas There are ongoing webinars/calls for these groups Each state council is asked to have the following positions: College Relations Diversity & Inclusion Governmental Affairs SHRM Certification Membership SHRM Foundation Workforce Readiness Chapters should consider these board roles as well Chapter volunteers in CLA roles should have ongoing communication with the state council CLA roles and with each other.

10 Membership Member Definitions At-large Members
At-large member is an individual who is a member of SHRM but is not affiliated with a local chapter. Recruiting at-large members to your chapter is a great way to increase SHRM membership in your chapter. Online membership application includes a required field for indicating chapter membership. Local Members Only (LMOs) An LMO is an individual who belongs to a local chapter but is not a SHRM member. Promote benefits of joining SHRM to your LMOs. Discount offered to first-time SHRM members via a promotional code (0118). Strengthens partnership between SHRM and the chapter.

11 Membership Member Definitions Primary Members
Member of more than one chapter (multi-member) who designates one chapter as the primary chapter (this chapter receives CFSP for the member). Multi-Members Member of SHRM who maintains membership in multiple chapters.  Primary chapter affiliation is with another SHRM affiliate chapter.  A chapter would receive credit for chapter affiliation percentage purposes for multi-members but not for CFSP.

15 Why don’t at-large members join chapters?
Membership CLA Why don’t at-large members join chapters? Here is a list of the most common responses from survey data: 1. I didn’t know there was a local chapter. 2. No one invited me to join. (They want a personal call or invitation specifically to them.) 3. The chapter’s bylaws prohibit me from becoming a member, even though I am a SHRM member. 4. I attended a chapter meeting and did not feel welcomed. 5. No one responded to my s/phone calls for membership information. 6. The chapter does not meet my needs. 7. I don’t have time to attend—too busy. 8. The chapter’s meetings are on days/times that are not convenient for me. 9. I would participate if the chapter offered more online resources. 10. The program topics were not beneficial to my job.

16 Why don’t at-large members join chapters?
Membership CLA Why don’t at-large members join chapters? Here is a list of the most common responses from survey data: 11. My company will not pay for SHRM and chapter dues. 12. Dues are too expensive for what the chapter offers. 13. Chapter programs do not have very good speakers. 14. Board members seem to be “cliquish.” 15. Too much selling by “vendors” at meetings. (SHRM has a sample non-solicitation policy in the VLRC) 16. The chapter is too large to get to know members personally. 17. Chapter doesn’t do a good job in communicating the benefits of joining.

17 SHRM Requirements For 100% chapters (chapters requiring SHRM membership to belong to the local chapter): ALL chapter members MUST be SHRM national members in good standing. Non-SHRM member categories are not permitted. 100% chapters are subject to the same minimum membership requirements as stated below for non-100% chapters, depending on the date of the chapter’s affiliation with SHRM. Chapters that do not have 100% SHRM membership will not be considered 100% chapters and will not receive the benefits of being a 100% chapter.

18 SHRM Requirements For non-100% chapters affiliated with SHRM prior to January 1, 2004: At least ten (10) SHRM national members primarily coded to the chapter or thirty percent (30%) of chapter membership must be active SHRM national members, whichever is GREATER. Chapters that fall below 10 SHRM national members primarily coded to the chapter or below 30% SHRM membership will be at risk of losing their SHRM affiliation.

19 SHRM Requirements For non-100% chapters affiliated with SHRM on or after January 1, 2004: At least twenty-five (25) SHRM national members primarily coded to the chapter or fifty-one percent (51%) of chapter membership must be active SHRM members, whichever is GREATER. Chapters that fall below 25 SHRM national members primarily coded to the chapter or below 51% SHRM membership will be at risk of losing their SHRM affiliation.

20 SHRM Requirements For non-100% chapters affiliated with SHRM on or after January 1, 2012: At least twenty-five (25) SHRM national members primarily coded to the chapter AND a minimum of fifty-one percent (51%) of chapter membership must be active SHRM members. Chapters that fall below 25 SHRM national members primarily coded to the chapter and below 51% SHRM membership will be at risk of losing their SHRM affiliation.

21 Getting Assistance There are four administrators at headquarters with a general number to call: (800) 283-SHRM x 3333; 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. ET. Anyone at that number can assist you with CFSP, rosters, designation forms, etc. The number will take voic s 24/7 but will only be manned from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. ET.    This is a generic inbox that will be accessible by all the Member Engagement Associates. Order SHRM supplies from your Member Engagement Associate. The FSDs don’t keep records, files, or supplies at their home offices.

28 Chapter Financial Support Payments (CFSP)
The CFSP Program returns a portion of each SHRM member’s dues to the chapter through this program. To be eligible for CFSP consideration, the chapter must complete part 1 of SHAPE which requires: Submit a completed SHAPE Year-End Report by 1/31 of each year and your membership roster if requested. Complete the SHRM Recertification Provider Reaffirmation by December 1. Provide year-end financial results with the SHAPE. Meet the applicable membership affiliation requirements. Have a chapter president who is a SHRM member in good standing throughout his/her term of office. Have SHRM-approved ratified bylaws on file at SHRM. Have the payment direct-deposited. Ensure that the current SHRM “AFFILIATE OF” logo is correctly, consistently, and prominently displayed in accordance with the Graphics Standards Manual. Submit chapter’s membership roster for auditing by SHRM staff and periodically request a membership report from our Member Engagement Associate (MEA) to conduct an internal audit. Hold a minimum of four chapter programming events and four chapter board meetings either in person or virtually during the calendar year, including a board transition/training meeting.

29 Chapter Financial Support Payments (CFSP)
SHRM pays chapters and councils several million per year in financial support. Pays each state council at least $2000 per year based on SHRM membership in state. (4,000 SHRM members in state = $4,000; 1,500 members in state = $2,000) The Chapter Financial Support Payment (CFSP) Program returns a portion of each professional (non-student) SHRM national member's dues to the chapter via a quarterly payment for 100% chapters (those chapters who require all members to be members in good standing of SHRM) or a twice-a-year payment for non-100% chapters. $10 per member for non-100% chapters and $25 per member for 100%

30 Chapter Financial Support Payments (CFSP)
Example: Chapter’s 12/31 SHRM Membership Count Difference Net Gain Payment (50 X $25) = $1,250

31 At-Large Lists and Audits
Membership Ideas At-Large Lists and Audits For chapters to request an at-large list, go to Once they get the at-large list, they should check to see if anyone on that list is actually a member of the chapter.  If so, alert the MEA to code those members to the chapter.  They should check this list on regular basis (at least quarterly) to ensure that the chapter is credited for members. Every month, chapters should send the MEA a list of new chapter members (who are SHRM members) so chapter records can be updated and they get credit for the members. They can request an in-chapter roster from the MEA at least quarterly to see if the chapter records match SHRM’s.  Tell the MEA of any discrepancies.
