1 Equipment and tools Lots of specialist tools and equipment are used to make textiles products. They have special features that allow you to carryout a task correctly and effectively. Tools and equipment can be divided into the following areas Colour and design Pressing Sewing and joining Advanced Components-items that become part of the final product.

2 Sewing Machines There are different types of sewing machines that are suited to different tasks.
MOST SEWING MACHINES ARE LOCKSTITCH MACHINES – they have an upper thread and a lower (bobbin) thread. Sewing machines speed up sewing and produce neat even stitched for a high quality finish.

3 Overlockers Overlockers are used to neaten edges to stop them from fraying. They cut and sew at the same time - so they sew, trim and neaten the edges. They are very good for using on stretch fabrics.

4 Embroidery Machines Also known as CAM machines.
Have already programmed stitches in the machine. Can be used with CAD software on a computer to created your own designs, transfer them onto the machine and embroider them.

5 Marking and Measuring Tailors chalk…transfers markings to your fabric that can be removed later. Tape measure – is flexible to go round a human body. Pattern master to help draw curves on patterns.

6 Cutting Paper scissors to cut out patterns
Dressmaking scissors – called shears, for cutting out fabric. Embroidery scissors for more delicate jobs. Pinking shears – to neaten seams Thread snips – to remove threads.

7 Sewing Needles There are different sorts of hand needles depending on what the needle will be used for. The right size and thickness of needle should be chosen for the job. Sharps – general purpose Embroidery Beading – for sewing on beads Pins These are used to hold fabric together before stitching.

8 Pressing Equipment Dry Irons Steam Irons Other Uses of Irons
These use heat and pressure to press the creases out of fabric. Steam Irons These are more effective. They use water and steam as well as heat and pressure. Other Uses of Irons Apply transfer designs to fabric Fix dyes Heat fixing things with bondaweb
