1 Transport biofuels research funded by the Swedish Energy Agency
Jonas Lindmark, Research and Innovation Department

2 The challenge – transport biofuels
The use of biofuels in transport is increasing rapidly but the fuels are mostly imported or produced from imported feedstock The supply of sustainable feedstock for HVO is limited There is great potential for using swedish feedstock to produce biofuels Feedstock origin – biofuels used in Sweden Energy GWh Energy GWh Sweden Import

3 Focus areas – biofuels research and innovation
The aim is to enable increased use and production of biofuels from lignocellulose and byproducts/waste Biofuels with composition identical to or similar to gasoline or diesel (drop-in) High priorty: Fuels from lignin Can be blended with existing fossil fuel and contribute to a fast transition High proportion blends and pure biofuels High priority: Ethanol Fuels via gasification (metane, methanol, DME) Biogas via AD Good long term alternatives but require new vehichles and infrastructure

4 What is the Energy Agency funding 2017?
Total funding for biofuels research approx. 120 MSEK/year. Total industrial and academic co-financing approx.135 MSEK/year (Renfuel project accounts for 24 %)

5 What is the Energy Agency funding?
The Swedish Center for Biomass Gasfication 19.5 MSEK/year (33 % support) Competence center started in 2011 focused on gasification of biomass. Three research nodes: SFC-CIBG Henrik Thunman, Chalmers SFC-Bio4Gasification Rikard Gebart, Luleå University of Technology SFC-Cleansyngas Klas Engvall, Royal Institute of Technology Funding for the next program period ( ) was recently granted.

6 What is the Energy Agency funding?
Biofuels research programs Biofuels research program Biochemical processes 25 MSEK/year Pretreatment for biochemical conversion Thermochemical processes 20 MSEK/year Gasification Pyrolysis Lignin conversion to fuels Why? Allow for combined concepts Less administration Flexibility

7 What is the Energy Agency funding?
Biofuels research program Budget: 45 MSEK/year Yearly calls. First call will open late June Main topics Thermochemical conversion Gasification of biomass and conversion to fuels Conversion of lignin from different sources to biofuels Pyrolysis of biomass and conversion to fuels Biochemical conversion Biochemical production of biofuels including pretreatment of feedstock. Industrial anaerobic digestion is included. Systems and integration System studies and biorefinery concepts

8 What is the Energy Agency funding?
Depolymerization of lignin and conversion to gasoline, diesel and other prod. Pilot plant in Bäckhammar Total budget 140 MSEK (50% support) Pilot plant in Obbola Total budget 53 MSEK (21% support) SCA Slurry hydrocracker in Piteå – research infrastructure for conversion of bio-oils to different products Total budget 14 MSEK (63 % support) ETC
