Geography of Latin America
SS6G1ab The student will locate selected features of Latin America and the Caribbean. a. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map: Amazon River, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Pacific Ocean, Panama Canal, Andes Mountains, Sierra Madre Mountains, and Atacama Desert. b. Locate on a world and regional political-physical map the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela.
2
Using the SMART tool pens, have students come up and label the map with the continents and oceans.
3
Latin America Chalk Talk. Using the SMART tools, have students brainstorm words that relate to or make them think of these words.
4
Freeze the slide with your remote, then have students come up 2 at a time and play “map slap”. When you call out a continent or ocean- the first one to “slap” the correct one wins. This is a game of speed and quick thinking. The best tool to use for this game is 2 fly swatters- who ever has theirs on the bottom- wins!

Map Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keGRszDVyDk
(Sung to the tune of a song from Robin Hood—Disney version) Latin America Pacific Ocean, Mexico, Sierra Madre Mountains, the Gulf of Mexico is where the hurricanes blow! Panama has the canal, Colombia, Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, share the Caribbean Sea. The Atacama desert, Andes Mountains, and Bolivia, the Amazon River runs across northern Brazil. And if you're ever on a boat and floating down the river, you'll go to the Atlantic where the Amazon ends! Play this song daily as they enter and leave. Make sure that they know it well and can point to the places on a map while singing and they will ace the test! I only play the video where they can see it in the beginning, then I make them have their maps out and as the song plays, I have them physically touch each place as they are saying it on their map.
