SLIDE 2 This is a very quick overview. Why do an elective? Work in the UK or abroad broaden your education part of your course brilliant experience Up to you where you go and what you do, up to you. Make the most of it!

3 Plan in Advance Earlier you start planning the more chance of attracting funding. Overseas correspondence can take time. Medical school should have contact with schools abroad. Lists of last years students Elective reports from past students.

We do this through: 1 presentations 2 electives guidance note from BMA (available online) 3 sources of funding list (available online) 4 MSC (not formally though) Important areas to think about are: how to decide where to go what you need to think about to keep healthy and safe when you’re there and when you come back how to protect yourself where you can get funding from

5 The BMA does not do… Indemnity Travel agency Funding SLIDE 4
We don’t do funding - we can tell you where to get it and how to apply, (see sources of funding list on the MSC part of the BMA website) but we don’t give anyone funding for an elective. Neither do we provide medical indemnity or advise students on where to go for their electives.

7 Travel Arrangements Make your travel plans as early as possible.
Take out insurance for whole period of elective. BMA Services : offer elective insurance. Tel number is Make sure your passport is up to date. Whether you need a visa. A letter from medical school you are visiting. Budgeting. Discounts.

8 Funding your elective Explore funding at an early stage
Check national and local awards available at your medical school Organisations who provide funding Lists in the Elective Guide

10 Health DH produces a very useful leaflet : Health advice for travellers. Interhealth : specialist travel health service. Take your own medical kit. Vaccinations

11 Seek medical advice early
Visit your doctor Immunisations Advance planning SLIDE 9 Visit your doctor at least 8 weeks prior to travel. Leave plenty of time for your immunisations to allow for necessary incubation periods of vaccinations/starting course of preventative medicine Get up to date information on immunisations required for the area you are travelling to.
