Year Information Session 2 Tuesday 25th July 2017 Linda McDonald –Deputy Principal Learning and Teaching

2 Freedom Prayer Loving God, creator of us all.
We give thanks for the many opportunities given to us to develop the gifts we have been given. In this year of Freedom, may we grow in acceptance of ourselves and others. Help us to serve one another humbly and to work to secure an equal opportunity for all. May we work sincerely, harmoniously and collectively in the pursuit of happiness and freedom, for being free is a continual journey fueled by love, felicity and acceptance. In challenging all that restricts our God–given freedom, may we let go of fear and open our hearts to love so that we may truly find the courage to be free. May we find resilience in the face of challenge. Let it go. Let it be. Only then shall we be truly free. Amen.

3 Acknowledgment to Country
'I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which we are meeting. I pay my respects to their Elders, past and present, and the Elders from other communities who may be here today.'

4 Senior Secondary Options at Loreto College
Three possible pathways/combinations: VCE – Victorian Certificate of Education VCAL – Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning VET – Vocational Education and Training

5 The VCE/VCAL as a course of study
VCE is generally taken over two years: Year 11 Units 1 & 2 in 2018 Year 12 Units 3 & 4 in 2019 VCAL is also a two year course Foundation – Intermediate - Senior One VET subject is compulsory with VCAL.

6 What is the VCAA? The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) is a statutory authority of the Victorian State Government responsible for the provision of curriculum and assessment programs in Victoria. At the senior secondary level, the VCAA provides curriculum and assessment for VCE and VCAL.

7 Why is the VCAA important?
At Loreto College we are authorised to deliver VCE and VCAL programs, and we have a responsibility do so in accordance with the guidelines and expectations of the VCAA. This ensures that no students completing VCE are unfairly advantaged or disadvantaged.

8 SAC Attendance Students will be notified of SAC dates and times in advance. Attendance is compulsory. Students unable to complete a SAC for a legitimate reason are required to attend a Supplementary Session. In 2018, Supplementary Sessions will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights from 3.30pm.

9 Examinations It is assumed that all students completing VCE subjects will sit examinations. Students completing a Unit 3/4 subject in Year 11 will sit an external examination in November. The final result (determined by VCAA) for any Unit 3/4 subject undertaken in Year 11 will contribute to an ATAR score calculated at the end of Year 12.

10 What is an ATAR? ATAR stands for…..
“Australian Tertiary Admission Rank”. It provides an overall measure of each student’s achievement across all of their Year 12 studies. A student’s ATAR is used by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) to assist tertiary institutions is selecting students for their courses.

11 ATAR Calculations - continued
VTAC takes the study scores in each subject and applies a process of scaling them either up or down. This scaling process is based on the strength of the students undertaking that subject or how hard it was to achieve the middle ranking. Subjects in which it is “harder” to achieve the average are scaled up (eg. Maths Methods, French) and other subjects may be scaled down.

12 What subjects will I choose?
Whilst the scaling of individual subjects may play a small part in your discussions about which subjects to choose at VCE, it is MOST important to choose areas of study that you find interesting and enjoyable. Overall, students will do better studying subjects that spark interest and are rewarding!

19 What is VCAL (Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning) ?
For students focused on vocational pathways Applied learning Different pathway Requires a VET subject 3 levels: Foundation, Intermediate and Senior 4 strands: Literacy, Numeracy, Work Related and Personal Development

21 Satisfactory completion of VCAL
In VCAL students must demonstrate they competencies in each VCAL subject through project based tasks. VCAL students can demonstrate their competency at one of the following levels: Foundation Intermediate Senior ****As well as regular attendance to classes.

22 VCAL and VET Provide our students with a different pathways to further education and the workplace. Provides for a different ways of learning. Students must apply to enter the VCAL program, Mrs. Jill Wheatland is the VCAL coordinator. Mrs. Marilyn Scott is the VET coordinator. Our VCAL girls complete a combination of VCAL subjects, 1 VET subject e.g. hospitality or Sport and Recreation, some do a VCE subject also which supports their VET subject.

23 VET (Vocational Education and Training)
Practically oriented subjects that provide a VCE Unit 1 – 4 and an industry accredited TAFE Certificate E.g. Hospitality, Multi-media, Sport and Recreation Can involve work placement With the exception of Multi-media most are offered off-site at High school or Fed University Please see your handbook or Mrs. Marilyn Scott is the VET coordinator for more information.

24 In VCE Unit 1 and 2 Assessment is determined by each school based of VCAA guidelines Unit 3 and 4:
For each Unit assessment is made up of : 1. School assessments completed at school, set, supervised and marked by your teacher. These are called SACs or SATs (School assessed tasks -SATs) (School assessed Coursework-SACs) If absent you must have a medical certificate. 2. VCAA November Examinations set and marked by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Every student studying Units 3 and 4 completes the General Achievement Test (GAT) in June

25 Preparation for Subject Selection
Session with Year 11 Coordinator and mentors. VCE coordinator Ms. Pam Harrison explanation of VCAA guidelines. Read the Information Handbooks Book. (copies here and available on College website) 4. Students are expected to talk to current teachers and obtain their recommendations. 5. Discuss subjects with: Parents Subject teachers, Faculty leaders, Mentor teacher Careers teacher

26 Things to consider about subject selection.
What do I see myself doing in the future? What subjects am I good at and enjoy doing? Which subjects are ‘prerequisite’ studies for the tertiary/TAFE course I’m interested in? Which subjects are ‘recommended’ studies for the tertiary/TAFE course I’m interested in?

27 Don’t make choices based on:
Who you think might be teaching the class Who you think might be in the class One subject will be “easier” than another
