Junior Job Shadow

What is job shadow? An opportunity for juniors to follow an employee at their workplace to learn more about a particular occupation or industry. This year, it will take place on May 16, 2017

Why should I participate?
Mandatory for all juniors. If you don’t have a site, you will complete a career exploration curriculum during school. Helps you to explore different career paths and/or majors for college Helps you make connections for your Senior Capstone Experience, summer work, etc Connects what you are learning in school to jobs/careers in the real world

Don’t know where to start?
Take “Do What You Are” survey on Naviance Complete Career Interest Profiler on Naviance Remember your Career Breakfast speakers...do you have any contacts? Network, network, network: family friends, parents of friends, neighbors, etc. Meet with your guidance counselor to discuss ideas

You have an idea… Contact the person you want to be your site mentor
Call or Explain what job shadow day is and why you’re doing it Be professional – don’t use abbreviations or slang DO: use proper spelling, introductions, and signature Ask your parents, teachers, or any adult to look over your or phone script

You’ve found a site….now what?

Now that you’ve got a site mentor…
You need your site mentor’s name, , phone number, and address of their job. Make sure that the for your site mentor is accurate. You must fill out a Google Form – it is found on the School to Careers website – under the Junior Job Shadow tab Log in with your Westford Google account

What else DO you need to know

Site Expectations Schedule an arrival and departure time
We recommend a full day but 4 hours minimum You must provide your own transportation. Discuss your responsibilities and goals as a student Arrive with questions you have regarding your site mentor’s job

What to bring… Job Shadow Expectations sheet Formal resume
on the School to Careers website under Information for Students Formal resume Questions for your site mentor Lunch (find out from your site mentor if this is necessary) An open mind!

What to wear Be ON TIME and dress appropriately
Wear business casual attire No tennis shoes, sandals, hats, or shorts Men: pants and collared shirts Women: no midriffs or tank tops It is OKAY to give your site mentor a call ahead of time to ask about the dress code

While you’re there Conducting an Interview – This questionnaire includes questions one would typically ask during an informational interview. Questions about Job Skills – These questions will help you to connect what you are learning here at WA with what you will use on the job. Keep your cell phone out of sight and silent Be polite and respectful

After you leave… Write your site mentor a thank you note
or handwritten Fill out the Post Job Shadow Reflection on Naviance – under “About Me” tab

In conclusion Job Shadow is taking place on May 16, 2017
Start looking for sites now...if you need help, just ask! Google Form must be completed by March 10, 2017 You will hear reminders in a future advisory as the date nears
