1 Student Fit- how to incorporate boot camp into your pE class
By: Marquel hatcher, ms

2 About me….. I am entering my 11th year of teaching physical education.
I am also an ACE certified group fitness instructor. I specialize in teaching boot camp classes. Education-Ms in exercise science and physical education, bs in exercise science

3 My vision

4 True Story-my first boot camp experience

5 Why? Classroom management
Multiple standards can be addressed, reinforcement of previously taught skills Different approach for teaching fitness concepts Improve social relationships of students-cooperation/teamwork Increase student interest in fitness It’s fun!

6 How do I incorporate boot camp concepts?
Warm ups Games Fitness Unit

7

8 Organizing your teaching environment for boot camp
Set clear expectations, practice, start small Students-whole group, squads (small group), partners Activities-warm up, game, stations Activity area/boundaries-cones, spots, visuals Managing transitions-music, timer, whistle Equipment

9 Vocabulary Amrap-as many reps as possible Sets Repetitions
FITT-Frequency intensity Time type Wod-workout of the day Components of fitness-muscular strength/endurance, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, (Power was recently added)

10 Warm-ups Step 1 Students will begin to jog as soon as they enter your teaching space. (3-5 min) Add other locomotor skills to the warm-up-skip, slide, hop, jump Step 2 Next, students stand in squads or other assigned space You can use a projector or chart paper to display the second part of the warm up

11 Warm-ups Pick 3-4 exercises that will address major muscle groups or pick exercises based on fitnessgram data Model progressions and regressions(suitability for diverse learners) Gradually increase the time (AMRAP for…..)

12 Addressing standards/reinforcement of previously taught skills, Warm up cont.

13 Fitness concepts during warm-ups
Boot camp can be used to teach the components of fitness. This allows you to explain the “why” of each exercise. This slide shows how I used the warm up to teach fitness components.

14 Fitness concepts/games
Boot camp classes involve games that are used to build camaraderie and create an enjoyable experience. I have incorporated boot camp games into my class, but I have modified them to fit my classes. Fitness tag, snail race, plank relay, sprints, etc.

15 Fitness Tag In boot camp, there is an exercise penalty when you are tagged during a game. The penalty is usually burpees. Fitness tag-the penalty for being tagged is to perform an exercise at the stations that matches the color of the ball that touched you. Students may re-enter the game after they complete their reps.

16 Fitness Tag

17 More Games.. Snail race-students will be organized in squads.
Plank relay-students will be organized in squads. One student will go to the opposite end of their team. This student will hold the plank position. The first student in line will run to the opposite end, and switch places with the student that is performing the plank. The student that started in the plank will run to the end of their squad. Students that are waiting to run can perform jumping jacks or run in place. This game can be played with a variety of exercises. Snail race-students will be organized in squads. Each squad will have a set of markers or cones placed in front of the line. Students will be given a set of exercises to complete. (10 jumping jacks, 5 squats, 1 burpee) Once the set of exercises is complete, a student will move the back marker to the front. The sequence continues until their ”snail” makes it a distance that is designated by the teacher.

18 Stations/circuits A typical boot camp class consists of a circuit that participants rotate through during the course of class. Participants move to the next station after about 1 minute to 1 minute 15 seconds of activity. You can take any combination of exercises or activities to create a circuit for your students. Sample circuit: bear crawl/jump over an obstacle, push ups, curl ups, shuttle run, climbing wall, flexibility activities Stations last for a teacher designated amount of time, students rotate on command
