Dmitri Mendeleev was the Russian chemist who invented the periodic table of the elements.
He was born in Siberia and was the youngest of 17 children.
Mendeleev missed receiving the Nobel prize in chemistry by just one vote in 1906, and died before the next year’s election.
Element 101 (discovered in 1955) was named Mendelevium in his honor.
