Rural Renaissance 20th October 2016
AGRIFORVALOR A Horizon 2020 funded Project Rural Renaissance 20th October 2016 IFFPA | Noel Gavigan
2
Objectives AGRIFORVALOR Main Objectives Connect industry and research organisations around Ireland and around the EU Identify sidestream biomass resources from agriculture and forestry Examine ways to exploit these sidestreams Identify new product development around Ireland and the EU => Turning waste, by-products and residues from agriculture and forestry into a valorised sidestream. Project LifeCycle: 1st March 2016 – 31st August 2018 IFFPA | Noel Gavigan
3
Vision Connecting a range of stakeholders in order to:
Achieve new value chains and Stimulate biomass sidestream market uptakes into value-added products. IFFPA | Noel Gavigan
4
Main Target Groups Helping Multi-actors in the Biomass Value Chain to Profit from Innovation Partnership Networks Farmers/Foresters: Becoming active partner in the biomass sidestream value chain. Gaining knowledge and receiving support in exploiting R&D&I results and exploring business development. (Bio)Industry: Raising awareness of the potential and opportunities of sidestream biomass applications along the chain of 5 Fs: (food, feed, fuel, fine-chemicals, fertiliser). Profiting from new business models based on forestry and agriculture biomass sidestreams. Research and Academia: Closing the research and innovation divide through better-directed research and development based on demands identified by practitioners. IFFPA | Noel Gavigan
5
Food / Feed Mainly associated with agriculture sector
- Minor possibilities with: Shiitake mushrooms Food additives from Birch wood (Finland) (Feed relates to animal feed and is not relevent to forestry) IFFPA | Noel Gavigan
6
Fuel Largest alternative use in Ireland at present Wood pellets Wood Chip Firewood Market looks set to grow considerably with an RHI IFFPA | Noel Gavigan
7
Fine Chemicals / Polymers
BioRefinery – using biomass rather than oil as a feedstock. Production of base chemicals for the chemical industry, pharmaceutical and polymer (plastics) industries. IFFPA | Noel Gavigan
8
RTD Example PEF bottles (Polyethylenfuranat)
IFFPA | Noel Gavigan | |
9
Best Practice Example Biopolymer out of lignin, TECNARO company
IFFPA | Noel Gavigan | |
10
Potentials BioPlastics Fine Chemicals Environment Energy

Building a H2020 Project Identify the need
Identify potential partners with required experience Draw up a project proposal / Apply for funding Running the project
14
Building a H2020 Project Identifying the need
New product New processes, efficiency, new raw materials Dealing with a problem material
15
Building a H2020 Project Identifying Potential Partners
Companies with experience Research institutions Coordinators
16
Building a H2020 Project Drawing up a Proposal
Decide on what's to be achieved and who will do the work Determine the input/resources required Determine the timescale Draw up a full proposal, technical and financial What you write will determine what you do!
17
Building a H2020 Project Running the Project
Stick to the plan Good communication between partners is essential Start the ball rolling early Maintain good records
