1 Math Community High School
Mr. Hartshorn’s Class Math Community High School

2 This year class will be digital!
That means there will be assignments on Canvas for students to access with their one-to-one devices. This will limit our paper usage and allow students utilization of 21st century online tools. While this will be a large change for all of us, having all your assignments online helps us work independently, at our own pace, add creativity, make up late/absence work. There will be less having to listen to a teacher and more doing!

3 RESPECT EACH OTHER A few ground rules for respect in the classroom:
Consideration of others. Especially in you voice tone/volume/word choice Working on your assignments without teacher/peers constantly reminding you. You will have time and access to work outside of class, but in class you need to work. Using your time wisely Using feedback to improve. Both from peers (when appropriate) and teachers/staff.

4 Language! Mr. Hartshorn will expect more from students this year in terms of language in the classroom. Language should be non-violent and free of profanity. I will be logging profanity in Educator’s Handbook as small incidents, but if they continue to build up, referrals may be earned. NON-NEGOTIABLES: Mr. Hartshorn will not tolerate any racial/racist language, nor talking about someone’s family. No cutting up on your classmates! This will be enforced more strongly than last year. Please be advised.

5 Non-Violent Communication (NVC)
This year Mr. Hartshorn will strongly encourage students to learn about and use Non-Violent Communication in the classroom to encourage productivity and collaboration. Although I know it will take time to learn, it truly is a meaningful life skill that will improve your communication skills for jobs and relationships in your future. A short introduction follows in the slides. Keep an open mind and I will also be patient with the class as we try a new way of communicating.

11 Appropriate Computer Use
Students will have access to devices for the completion of school work. Computers will be assigned to students for the entire semester. Students must complete the assignments to pass the course. Mr. Hartshorn will help as much or as little as students would like. Help can be giving in person or posted digitally in the Canvas course according to your preference. Music may be listened to only with headphones and only during working time. The class will work out a signal for transition from whole group instruction to independent/small group work. Students are encourage to share one piece of classwork per week on social media for extra credit! Mr. Hartshorn will allow social media time in class only once per week (Friday) as a reward and opportunity to post your work online. Students who can not work within these expectations may receive extra supervision when using their device or lose access all together if the situation warrants.

12 Other Changes/Misc Rules
We will have a break halfway through class for restrooms, the same as last year. Mr. Hartshorn requires 5 Achieve articles for a graded outcome. *Students will not be allowed into the teacher workroom for any reason (drinks, snacks, ect)* *Arriving late and/or being absent will result in a call home to parents, daily*

13 ECM – Essentials for College Mathematics
Students in ECM will receive a review/deeper understanding of the math concepts learned throughout high school, as well as, some review of basic math skills. The online program, EDREADY, will be used at least once per week and will prepare you for Math at the college level. EDREADY is an online program developed by ABTECH and is designed to help students receive their college math credit in high school. Your final in ECM will be the placement test at ABTECH. You achievement will determine what Math you would have to take at ABTECH. This can save you around $500 in courses at ABTECH if you pass.

14 Math 2 Math 2 students will follow the standard Math 2 curriculum with an emphasis on Geometric Reasoning and Proofs, a deep understanding of Quadratic Functions, practical Trigonometric Methods, and much more. Mr. Hartshorn loves to do fun Math projects! There will be many ways to show your understanding. Projects, class work, and tests are all ways a student can gain credit in this course. Digital submissions of work leave no doubt that a student deserves to pass this class, even if Math is a struggle for you!

15 Supplies Consider buying a nice Stylus for class. I really encourage students to embrace the technology in the classroom as we progress to paper-free instruction. I am trying to get a class set of styluses, but if you have your own nice stylus you will appreciate it, especially if you like to draw/are artistic.

16 Programs Students will become proficient in the use of ONENOTE as their digital notebook in class. SNIPPING TOOL will be used to take screen shots of math work on the computer for digital submission. Khan Academy, Youtube, Desmos, Kahoot, Xpmath, and Canvas will all be used heavily in this course. Students will come away from this Math class with a broad set of 21st century tools which will set you apart from your peers by giving you a competitive advantage. Just knowing how to use this technology can ensure you have a secure, well- paying job in your future.

17 Todays Learning Targets!
*Students will be able to log into their assigned laptops. *Students will be able to log into Mr. Hartshorn’s Canvas course. *Student will complete and submit one or more assignments in the Canvas class by the end of class. There may be some troubles here and there as we acclimate ourselves to this digital instruction, but be patient! I really believe this will make class more fun, engaging, and allow for more learning and creativity.
