KS1 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Workshop for Parents

2 The Aims Of This Evening
To tell you about the grammar, punctuation and spelling expectations for KS1. To share the new the new Key Stage 1 grammar, punctuation and spelling test. To inform you about the new KS1 SATS tests.

3 Assessment Bands At the end of Year 2 we will let you know how your child is progressing within the framework of the National Curriculum in reading, writing and maths. Year 2 Standards: Pre Key Stage 1 Standard Working Towards the Expected Standard Working At the Expected Standard Working At Greater Depth

4 What’s the good stuff? The curriculum has been slimmed down so that we can focus on less things but in more depth. There has been a focus on “going back to basics”, getting our handwriting, spelling, grammar and punctuation right! (Let’s walk before we can run!) Less focus on having to write for a range of purposes, which confuses young children as they have too much to remember! We can be creative as we want with our writing! We teach the basics in literacy sessions and put our good writing skills to use in creative writing tasks! Our children love learning new words and they are coping well with the new expectations.

5 Grammar and Punctuation in Reception
The use of correct grammar is modelled through speech in the first instance and then through reading and writing. We expect the children to use the correct forms of past, present and future tense when talking about events and to express themselves effectively showing awareness of the listeners needs.

6 Spelling in Reception Know all of the individual letter
sounds and names. They should know all of the phonemes taught in phases 2 and 3 for example: ch sh ai or igh ee ow th ng oa oo

7 Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
In June all Year 1 children will have a try at the Phonics Screening Check. It consists of 40 words of which 20 are made up and 20 are real words. The test assesses the child’s ability to segment words into sounds and then blend them together. There is no time limit for this but we can stop the test if the child is finding it difficult. We are told the pass rate at a later date. (For the last 3 years it has been 32 but we anticipate it will rise.) Those children who do not reach the pass rate have to redo the test at the end of Year 2.

8 The new Key Stage 1 GPS test
The new national curriculum will be assessed for the first time in May 2016. The test will consist of two components. Paper 1- A spelling task. Paper 2- Grammar based questions

33 How do we assess your child’s writing?
We use the SPAG tests to see if your child has met the expected standard. We use samples of their writing from March-June to reach a conclusion on which “band” they have achieved. We are given a set of “I can statements” for each band and we look through your child’s writing to see if they have used/met them. We use both the test and the writing to then make a decision.

34 KS1 SATS Our special quizzes will take place across the month of May, as part of our normal school work. The children may be taken out in small groups for some of the tests and in large groups for others. This depends on the type of test and the needs of individual children. Most of the tests will be done inside the classroom. The children are used to doing these type of activities and working under a time constraint.

35 What do they look like? Maths 1 Mental Arithmetic Test (20 mins)
1 Reasoning Paper (35 mins) English- Reading 2 Reading Comprehension Papers: 1 easier paper with 20 questions (30 mins) 1 harder paper with a separate booklet and 20 questions (40 mins) Writing 1 SPAG Paper (20 mins) 1 Spelling Test (15 mins)

36 Are the tests important?
Yes! They help us to confirm, alongside the children’s work, exactly where they are. It helps us to see what their strengths and weaknesses are, as well as what they can do completely independently. Yes! It is a statutory requirement for all children in Year 2 to complete the tests. It is a way of assessing where the children sit compared to national standards.

37 Advice to Parents Keep everything normal! Don’t mention them to the children so the children view them as an every day activity. Make sure they get a good night’s sleep and have a good breakfast! We will tell you when they are finished! Come and speak to us if you have any worries.
