Year One Phonics Workshop
2
Phonics is an essential part of your child’s learning
Phonics is an essential part of your child’s learning. It enables them to blend sounds and then read words. As well as this, they learn to listen for the sounds in words so that they can write them. Children use phonics all the time at school - in almost everything they do. We make phonics fun by using stories, objects, rhymes, games and actions.
3
Teaching Phonics We teach phonics in 6 phases using a combination of Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds. Phase 1 – Concentrates on developing children’s speaking and listening skills. Phase 2 – Moves onto the introduction of phonemes (sounds) and blending.
4
Each individual phoneme has a sound button which the children press to make the sound.
If there are 2 phonemes (digraph) we use a stretch button e.g. ff, or, ch. This helps the children understand that the two sounds are friends and hold hands to make just one sound.
5
Starting to blend We can then use these phonemes to begin to blend words. By pressing each sound button they can hear a word. tap

Phase 3 Once the children are ready we move to Phase 3
Phase 3 Once the children are ready we move to Phase 3. During this phase they are introduced to tri-graphs. Three phonemes making one sound; air, igh, ear, ure. They also use stretch buttons.
10
Phase 3 blending When learning to blend new words we use the technique my turn, together, your turn. We also use are arms to help identify the different sounds within the word. chair frown spoil
11
Phase 4 Consolidates their blending, segmentation and writing skills.

Examples of Phase 4 blending words nest. band gift. gulp drift

13
Phase 5 This phase introduces the alternative ways of making different sounds e.g:- igh, ie, i-e ai, ay, a-e oa, oe, o-e We teach the children about split digraphs (magic e) e.g. a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e They learn that ‘magic e’ sends a spell over to the vowel to make it say it’s name not it’s sound. like make cube
14
Vowel hand We teach the children to use their hand to help them remember short and long vowels.
15
Phase 6 The focus is learning spelling patterns.

Phonics screening check
Every Year 1 child in the country will be taking a statutory phonics screening check in the same week in June 2017. The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. The focus of the check is to provide evidence of children’s decoding and blending skills, not to test their vocabulary. For your child to pass they will need to be able to identify all phase 2-5 digraphs and blend words with them in.
17
What will happen during the test?
The test will be administered to children individually by a teacher and will only take 5-10 minutes to complete. The test will be undertaken in a quiet room within the school. Children will be asked to put the sound buttons and stretch marks under the word before blending it aloud and saying the word. The check will consist of 20 words and 20 non-words (‘alien’ words). Children will be told if the word is a real or ‘alien’ word, with a corresponding alien image.

What we have learnt over the years
Using lots of b and d’s in words. We spend time teaching children to use their hands to support them with this and colour coding the b (blue) and d (red). Digraphs are often reversed in words e.g. ro, ra. Which the children read as or and ar. We teach the children to look for the ‘look a likes.’ Using words that the children are unfamiliar with e.g. fuel. If your child has speech production problem this will be taken into account.
20
After the test… We are not permitted to indicate to the children at the time whether they have correctly sounded out and / or blended the word. Children will be scored against a national standard - the level required to pass has not been announced this year. In previous years the pass mark has been 32/40. You will receive your child’s result in their end of year report. If your child’s score falls below the national standard they will be given additional support and will re-take the Phonics Screening Check in Year 2.

Your child will come home with a Phonics screening booklet today. At the back you will find real and alien words to blend, b and d sheet along with some useful websites. This PowerPoint and the phonics booklet will be added to the website for you to refer back to.
