2 Why DO WE teach phonics? The ability to read and write well is a vital skill for all children, paving the way for an enjoyable and successful school experience. Phonics helps children to develop good reading and spelling skills e.g. cat can be sounded out for reading and spelling We use a synthetic scheme called ‘Letters and Sounds’ as our teaching resource. 3 Terminology •Phonemes: the smallest units of sound that are found within a word •Grapheme: a letter or a number of letters that represent a sound (phoneme) e.g sh ch •Digraph: two letters that make one sound •Trigraph: three letters that make one sound •CVC: stands for consonant, vowel, consonant •Segmenting: breaking up a word into its sounds •Blending : putting the sounds together to read a word •Tricky words: words that cannot easily be decoded Alien words: words that are not real, also known as pseudo

4 Phonics Consists of: Identifying sounds in spoken words
Recognising the common spellings of each sound Blending sounds into words for reading Segmenting words into sounds for spelling Spacings changed “phonemes” was used – definition is on following page…

5 How to say the sounds Saying the sounds correctly with your child is extremely important The way we say sound may well be different from when you were at school We say the shortest form of the sounds This is a helpful video showing all 44 phonemes

Phase 2 Learning phonemes to read and write simple words •Children will learn their first 19 phonemes: Set 1: s a t p Set 2: i n m d Set 3: g o c k Set 4: ck (as in duck) e u r Set 5: h b l f ff (as in puff) ll (as in hill) ss (as in hiss) •They will use these phonemes to read and spell simple “consonant-vowel-consonant” (CVC) words: sat, tap, dig, puff, hill, hiss All these words contain 3 phonemes.

7 Still no more than 3 phonemes in a word – fear light
Phase 3 •Children will enter phase 3 once they know the first 19 phonemes and can blend and segment to read and spell CVC words. •They will learn another 26 phonemes: •j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu •ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er •They will use these phonemes (and the ones from Phase 2) to read and spell words: boat, boot, look, farm, fork, burn, town, coin, dear, fair, sure Still no more than 3 phonemes in a word – fear light

8 Phase 4 Introducing consonant clusters: reading and spelling words with four or more phonemes •Children move into phase 4 when they know all the phonemes from phases 2 and 3 and can use them to read and spell simple words (blending to read and segmenting to spell). •Phase 4 doesn’t introduce any new phonemes. •It focuses on reading and spelling longer words with the phonemes they already know. •These words have consonant clusters at the beginning: spot, trip, clown …or at the end: tent, mend, damp, burnt …or at the beginning and end! trust, spend, twist

12 Phase 6 Phase 6 focuses on spellings and learning rules for using alternative sounds to spell. Children look at syllables, root words and mnemonics. because – big elephants can always understand small elephants. people – people eat omelettes people like eggs Children might about past tense, rules for adding ‘ing’ and irregular verbs Homophones – where, wear Plurals – s, es, ies Suffixes and prefixes

13 Suffixes - -ing, -er, -est, -ed, -y
If a word ends in an e, drop the e and add the suffix - e.g. hike – hiking If a word ends in vowel consonant, double the consonant and add the suffix e.g. drop – dropping If a word ends in 2 consonants, just add suffix. e.g. jump – jumping Suffixes - -ful, -ness, -less, -ment, -ly These suffixes can usually be added straight onto the root word. e.g. enjoyment, careful, fearless, quickly However, the main exception is when the word ends in ‘y’. e.g. happiness

14 Questions ABOUT THE PHONICS SCREENING CHECK
What is the phonics screening check? The phonics screening check will be taken individually by all children in Year 1 in England in June . It is designed to give you information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill. Removed “Year one” from title, changed spacing

15 What is in the phonics screening check?
There will be two sections in this 40- word check and it will assess their phonics skills and knowledge Your child will read up to four words per page to their teacher. There will be 20 real words and 20 ‘alien words’ We will make it as low-key as possible – the children will not be informed it’s a “test” – it only takes 5 minutes. ? Are we going to do it booklet form or on flashcards?? Split ORIGINAL final paragraph into 2 bullet points Added final bullet point

16 Here is a video of the check and what children can expect to experience. h1Bk If a child does not pass the Phonics Screening, they will be given extra Phonics support in school and re-checked in Year 2.

REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader. Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to: Sound out Re-read to check it makes sense. Use pictures for clues. Ask questions about the book. And most importantly ENJOY READING!
