1 DIGITAL DIVIDE What is the Digital Divide? Politics
“the gulf between those who have ready access to the internet, and those who do not..” [1] President Barack Obama in July of 2015 unveiled a program to help those who need internet called ConnectHome. It goals are to: Make broadband a standard for buildings which will allow residents to use the internet at a free or discounted rate. Make broadband internet more valuable by giving residents localized, free, and culturally sensitive training in essential digital literacy skills Make broadband adoption more sustainable by providing devices and technical support to our residents. [5][6] Who does it affect? POOR - “According to the 2012 Pew Report “Digital Differences,” only 62% of people in households making less than $30,000 a year used the internet, while those making $50,000 -$74,000 are at 90%.” [2] MINORITIES- There are still gaps in high-speed internet access; only 49% of African Americans have internet, 51% for Hispanics and 66% for Caucasians. Roughly a 15% gap! [2] RURAL – 67% of urban residents use internet, but only 52% of rural residents use the internet. [4]
