2 What We Know Today… In order to compete in a 21st century global economy, Pennsylvania needs a highly-educated and proficient workforce. The current year’s U.S. workforce is facing a shortage of 12 million qualified workers for the fastest-growing job sectors including engineering, health care and computer technology. (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) This will make it imperative that all students both enrolled and out of school - have the skills and education to meet this shortage.

5 Berks Business Education Coalition Career Visit
All Sophomores will visit a local business during the first quarter of the school year The purpose is to acquaint students with the factors employers consider when hiring (communication skills, attitude, computer literacy, reputation, school performance) Alcon, Met Ed, Pottstown Medical Center, Sealstrip, Brentwood Industries and more

7 School Counselor Classroom Presentations and Individual Conferences
Counselors are in classrooms several times a year to distribute important information relevant to the current grade level. Counselors are available for educational, career, personal, social and emotional issues. Students can make individual appointments with counselors before school, after school, and during open periods. Parent/Student evening informational sessions

9 Advanced Placement Courses
An AP student receives the maximum preparation for college. Students may be exempt from taking certain courses in college with an AP test grade of The AP test is given at the conclusion of the AP course. Students may be eligible for honors and special programs in college for being an AP student in high school. Typically requires summer work AP students receive a GPA weight of .2 for having a final grade of a C or higher. Cost for each exam is approximately $90.00

10 Honors Courses Rigorous coursework which may include summer assignments Classes move at a faster pace with more independent learning expectations The final GPA of a student for each Honors course in which the student has achieved at least a grade of B- will be raised .1

11 Concurrent Enrollment
Excellent opportunity to experience postsecondary coursework while still in the high school environment CE courses are indicated in the course selection book yearly CE opportunities are advertised through announcements and correspondence to parents The final GPA of a student for each CE course in which the student has achieved at least a grade of B- will be raised by .1

12 Why Take Concurrent Enrollment?
Students get the experience of taking a college course while still receiving the support from the high school. Students get an early start on the courses required at college. Concurrent enrollment credits transfer to all the state universities and other institutions that have partnerships with the community college. Parents save money! The cost of dual enrollment credits is reduced. @ $ per 3 – 4 credit course

You will be required to complete a demonstration of what the course will look like. You will be required to complete a summer orientation program online. This must be completed prior to the start of the school year. Work can be done “anytime,anywhere”.

16 PRE-ACT Students will take this in 10th grade
Considered a practice ACT test. Use these results when choosing courses during high school. Useful for determining how you will do on the ACT as a Junior/Senior

17 PSAT/NMSQT Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test All Juniors and Sophomores have the opportunity to take the PSAT. Test is given once each year in October. Must take it as a Junior in order to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition. If you are interested in signing up for this as a Sophomore, you must sign up in May of 9th grade.

18 SCHOLASTIC ASSESSMENT TEST (SAT)
Test taken by both Juniors and Seniors College entrance exam 2 areas tested- Evidence-Based Reading and Writing & Math (essay optional) Test dates and locations are available at collegeboard.com Boyertown is not a test site due to construction at the high school

19 ACT College entrance exam available to juniors and seniors
4 areas tested- English, Math, Reading, Science (essay optional) Test is given 5 times per year on Saturdays Dates and locations are available at actstudent.org or in the counseling office Boyertown is not a test site due to construction

20 KEYSTONE EXAMS REPLACE PSSA’S
You must score proficient or higher on the Keystone Exams in Algebra 1, Biology, and Literature in order to get your Boyertown Area Senior High School diploma. Your score will be placed on your transcript which is your official high school record

21 Keystone Exams Administered at the conclusion of the following courses
Algebra I (possibly Geometry) English Literature (English 10) Biology (Biology 10) If unsuccessful the first time taking the Keystone Exams, you WILL be required to re-take them Grade 10 students will NOT be required to take the EOCA in Biology 10 AND English 10

22 EOCA’s Are administered in all courses at BASH.
At the conclusion of the school year administered via an EOCA schedule All related study courses administered during class time at the conclusion of the course. Constitute twenty (20) percent of a course’s final grade.

28 Selection of Courses Use the recommendation form from your current teachers when making selections. Students may not drop courses once the selection process concludes on May 26th. We do not drop or change classes!!!!!!!!!!

29 GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

30 Career-Technical Program (BCTC)
You will receive 3 credits for BCTC each year. BCTC students select math, social studies, English, science and health/PE to be scheduled at BASH.

31 NCAA Eligibility Standards
Pertinent information for student athletes wishing to play at the collegiate level at a Division I or Division II level school can be found in the Program of Studies.

32 Course Selection Sheet
You must choose a minimum of 7.0 and a maximum of 8.0 credits. This includes major subjects as well as electives. If you schedule 8.0 credits, you will not have a study hall/open campus. You must choose a minimum of two alternate electives and designate those choices as “ALT” on the line next to the course number. Choose your courses based on your educational and career plans as well as your interests.
