5 Virginia Tech InclusiveVT: institution’s strategy for inclusion & diversity via a distributed model Division of IT closely coupled InclusiveVT with strategic & operational plans. Initiatives include: Improve the workplace environment New IT Advisory Council focused on culture & org change Creation of new employee orientation specific to Division of IT Creation of stronger onboarding processes such as: checklist, buddy program, and supervisor responsibilities Creation of a new employee lunch with the CIO Developing new manager training focused on best practices New employee awards and recognition programs Understanding and improving our employee data Consideration of off-cycle climate surveys Improve recruitment Unconscious bias training for all faculty searches Expanding participation in local and regional job fairs Creating an internship program for community college students Requiring more use of diversity-targeted job posting sites Considering a search advocate program Tailoring job descriptions using inclusive language and reducing unnecessary/preclusive requirements Developing a training program on recruiting lifecycle Recruitment goals: achieve a more diverse and inclusive faculty and staff; bring in diverse perspectives; and build a deliberate approach to recruitment in our operations and strategy Recruitment outcomes: Have seen significant improvement in affirmative action goal achievement; increased student employment and engagement; expanded presence at recruiting events; marketing improvements Workplace goals: demonstrate inclusive practices in daily operations, improve retention, celebrate diverse perspectives, consistently include environment as a success factor in operations and strategy Workplace outcomes: Have seen positive feedback from employees on new culture and orientation activities; creation of new org culture initiatives by the IT Advisory Council

57% of professional occupations held by women. Women hold 26% of US technology jobs. Women make up 19% of software developers. Women earn 18% of computer/information science degrees. Women hold 17.2% of research university presidencies. Women hold 14% of executive officer positions. Only 5% of Technology leadership jobs are held by women. Approximately 4.5% of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women. Women of color are even more underrepresented.
