TOPIC: Scientific Method
Aim: Explain the steps of the Scientific Method. Do Now: HW check Lab Safety Activity and Sci method Reading notes HW: Upload Variables file from Schoology into the Scientific Method Notebook on GoodNotes.
3
Identify the improper lab procedure observed in the diagram.
He is not using the wafting technique. He is drinking a can of soda as he is performing a lab. The student is yanking the plug out of the electrical socket.
4
Write the PAGE NUMBERS next to each question to help you find the answer.
(line 6) (lines 6 and 7) (line 7) (lines 7 and 8) (line 8) 9. (line 8)
5
1. Identify the 1st step of the scientific method in THREE WORDS.
State the PROBLEM Asking a QUESTION
6
Under what color light will plants grow best?
Problem Under what color light will plants grow best?
7
2. Identify the 2nd step of the scientific method.
Do background research by observing by studying books, the Internet or other sources
8
3. Identify the 3rd step of the scientific method.
Form a hypothesis An educated guess
9
4. What is the hypothesis based on
4. What is the hypothesis based on? (How do you come up with your hypothesis?) Background research
10
Research Plants absorb light to produce their food during photosynthesis. Plants contain the pigment chlorophyll. Plants produce sugar (glucose).
11
Hypothesis I think the plant under green light will grow best because plants are green.
12
5. Identify the 4th step of the scientific method.
Perform experiments to test the hypothesis.
13
Experiment Each plant is placed under a certain color light.
They will get the same amount of light, & will be watered every 2 days. Their height will be measured (in centimeters) once a week for 5 weeks.
14
6. Identify what is tested when performing an experiment.
Hypothesis
15
7. Identify the 5th step of the scientific method.
Analyze the results of the experiment. Make observations
16
8. CIRCLE the choice to identify the meaning of the term analyze in line 8 in the reading.
to ignore to study closely to combine to make
17
Observations B A C D E

Analayze results 1 2 3 4 5 6 PLANTS Height (cm) Growth of plants 12 10
8 Height (cm) 6 4 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 PLANTS
23
9. Identify the 6th step of the scientific method.
Draw a conclusion. Conclusion = is your hypothesis right or wrong To conclude = to determine
24
Analayze results 1 2 3 4 5 6 PLANTS Height (cm) Growth of plants 12 10
8 Height (cm) 6 4 2 1 2 3 4 5 6 PLANTS
25
Conclusion My hypothesis was wrong. Plants grow best under blue light, not green light. The plant under blue light grew 11cm while the plant under green light grew only 2 cm.
26
Steps of the scientific method
Problem Research Hypothesis Experiment Analyze results Conclusion
27
Let’s summarize… List the steps of the scientific method. Problem, Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, Analyze data, Conclusion 2. Explain the difference between the problem and the hypothesis. The problem is the question and the hypothesis is your educated guess. 3. What are you testing when performing an experiment? The hypothesis
28
Let’s summarize… 4. What is used to make observations? 5 senses – sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell 5. Describe an example of an observation. His shirt is blue. It is hot in the room. The substance smells like banana. 6. Identify what the conclusion states. Whether your hypothesis is correct or incorrect.
29
Review: The first step in the scientific method is to state the problem experimentation to state the hypothesis draw a conclusion
30
When performing an experiment, you are testing the
problem hypothesis data conclusion
31
An educated guess to the problem of an experiment is known as a
variable theory hypothesis law
32
Your hypothesis is based on your
conclusion data research problem
33
Your senses can be used to make a(n)
observation conclusion hypothesis problem
