Flashcards Directions and examples Use this PowerPoint to help you do your first round of flashcards. This presentation includes directions and examples. We will discuss how to do these in class. This presentation is for home or parent reference.
2
Terms and numbers The vocabulary term should be written on BOTH cards.
The vocabulary term should be numbered and underlined on BOTH cards. Number your terms as they are numbered on the directions.
3
Bullets ALL cards should have at least 3 bullets. (more if needed)
1) A given definition. You can use a definition from you notes. 2)A definition in your own words. Make this different from the bullet above. 3)An example of the term. Sometimes a term may have different bullet directions. Follow the specific directions on the assignment sheet.
4
Drawing All cards have a drawing that represent the vocabulary term.
Draw a representation of your example bullet. Also, labeling your picture will be helpful in understand how the picture connects to the meaning of the vocabulary term. Don't be afraid to write on the drawing flashcard. The picture should be a visual explanation of the term. Be sure your drawing is connected to the term and makes sense. Use color on your drawing. You are not graded on artistic ability. Effort is what matters.

2. Title Flashcard bullet page example
-informative -relevant -simple -main idea of lab -the title should give information on what the experiment is about. -Ex: Plant Growth
9

3. Problem (Flashcard bullet page example)
What you want to know Specific Detailed Include Independent variable Include Dependent variable * Ex: Will plants grow taller with or without fertilizer?
11
Problem flashcard Student example Notice that the example at the bottom connects to the drawing. Draw your example on every card.
12
4. Hypothesis Flashcard bullet page example
restate the problem what do you think will happen prediction Ex: I think plants with fertilizer will grow taller than plants without fertilizer
13
Hypothesis Student example
14
5. Materials (Flashcard bullet page example)
Column Complete list Bulleted Specific amount for each material Ex: Seeds 2 cups Soil 5 ounces water
15
Materials student example
16
6. Procedure (Flashcard bullet page example)
All steps included numbered column NO pronouns Repeatable by anyone Steps should be specific and detailed Ex: 1) dig 4 inch hole 2) place 2 seeds in hole 3) 4)

7. Data Flashcard bullet page example
title graph, chart, table labels, title, neat NO sentences based on observations

8. Conclusion Flashcard bullet card example
What you learned RESTATE your hypothesis… then Tells if experiment was supported (or not) Tell if experiment is controlled Answers the problem question Ex: My hypothesis that plants will grow taller when using 5 fertilizer pellets was supported.

9. Controlled Experiment Flashcard bullet page example
There are two groups. Control Group & Experimental Group All the conditions except ONE are kept constant. For an experiment to be valid it must be a controlled experiment.
27
Controlled Experiment
Student Example
28
10. Variable Flashcard bullet page example
Anything that can affect the outcome of the experiment. Try to control the variables of the experiment Example: What are the variables if planting corn?
29
Variable Student Example
30
11. Control Group Flashcard bullet page example
In this group, all the variables remain the same. The control group should be set up as it is normally done. Ex:

Control Group Student Example
32
12. Experimental Group Flashcard bullet page example
In this group, all the variables remain the same except one. The one variable that is being changed on purpose This variable is the independent variable
33
Experimental Group Student Example
34
13. Independent Variable Flashcard bullet page example
This is the variable that is purposely being altered as stated in the hypothesis This is the variable that is being tested The variable that could cause a change in the dependent variable Difference between the control group and the experimental group IS the independent variable
35
Independent variable Student Example
36
14. Dependent Variable Flashcard bullet page example
The results Dependent variable is the response, reaction, or result of the experiment Can be measured DEPENDS on other factors/variable
37
Dependent Variable Student Example
38
NOTES The difference between independent and dependent variable is the Independent Variable causes a change in Dependent Variable and it isn't possible that the Dependent Variable could cause a change in Independent Variable. For example: Time Spent Studying (Independent) causes a change in Test Score (Dependent) and it isn't possible that Test Score could cause an involuntary or automatic change in Time Spent Studying.
39
Independent variable – adding fertilizer Dependent variable – grass is greener
40
15. Observation Flashcard bullet page example
Using your senses to find out what is going on around you Strictly Facts What you see All can agree
41
Observation Student Example
42
16. Inference Flashcard bullet page example
A possible explanation for what happened based on the facts. What you think
43
Inference Student example
44
17. Metric Measurement Flashcard bullet page example
Based on units of 10 Used around the world All scientists can communicate
45

All flashcards will be kept together on the same ring or spiral.
You may want to keep your flashcards in a plastic bag. This will help protect them and cards won’t fall out.
