Keep In Mind….. Studying is necessary for everyone in college
Studying for classes at McDaniel may be very different from studying for classes in high school or at your prior college if you are a transfer student Best ways to study vary from person to person and from class to class Consider your learning style - auditory, visual, tactile when deciding the best way to study (see web site to complete the VARK –learning style questionnaire Modify and adapt these general study tips to meet your needs Utilize the general tips to brainstorm new ones
4
Keep In Mind…. Do not implement any study methods that conflict with the McDaniel College Honor Code or rules and policies of your particular professor Any questions or doubts –Ask your professor or the deans

First Steps To Acing Every Test….
Know yourself, your learning style, and your study habits –Be honest with yourself about all of the above Being mindful of your current study habits is important –helps you figure out your strengths and areas you can develop To complete a survey on your study habits, see:

Acing The Test Starts With Self-Care
Self-care is key to success in school Eating and sleeping well is associated with higher grades Take responsibility and manage all aspects of your life to ace school Arrange your lifestyle so school is like a 40 hour a week job 168 hours in a week so you still have plenty of hours to fill with other activities even if you are spending 40 hours a week on school

Acing The Test Starts With Self-Care
Doing well in school means working hard and putting in time. It does not mean you cannot do anything but study, though Quote from an actual college student: "I used to think that the best way to succeed in school was to study, study and even study some more. I realized the saying that 'all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy' really holds true at the college level. College success is more than just academics; it's learning how to be an adult for the first time in your life. It's about developing tremendous interpersonal relationships with professors, counselors, and most importantly your peers. It's the whole college experience that enables one to truly succeed. Meeting new people, opening your mind to different ideas and cultures, and most importantly, the enjoyment of the four plus years that you're in school.”

Importance of Your Syllabus In Studying
A good place to begin studying (believe it or not) is with your syllabus Look for course objectives/course goal (chances are you will be tested on this material) Ask yourself “What material does the syllabus emphasize?” May contain study tips specific to the class Professors expectations for grades may be documented

Study Environment… So Important
Video –Study Environments Q

Important Points: Study Environment
Some research says that varying the location where you study helps you retain material Other research says studying in the same place where you will take the test promotes recall of the material (i.e. classroom) For some, it is important to have a separation between your living space and study space Create a “symbol” that you are working such as wearing a certain hat or placing an object on your desk); Sends the message to yourself and to others that you are working Have all your materials on hand when you begin studying –books, papers, handouts, pens, pencils, electronic copies of documents etc.

Student Quotes: Student Environments
“I like to study in the quiet areas at the library and I also like to close myself up in a room at home away from any possible distractions.” “I study in the Honors College study room and lounge, the library, and empty classrooms. I like to vary the location. It's important to be comfortable -- not too hot or too cold. It's also important to get away from nagging family, friends, phone, TV, etc.” “I like to study in the same location with a friend. About an hour into studying I check up on my friend or he checks up on me. We do this to make sure our minds don't wander. We take a 10 or 15-minute break and then continue studying for another hour or so.”
13
Utilizing Peers To Study
Make a friend in every class-exchange contact information in case you have questions for each other Review notes together Quiz each other on material-explaining material to someone else is a sure way to be confident that you know the information Study groups are powerful in improving student grades Always be mindful of the Honor Code and professor rules when giving or receiving assistance from other students
