#1 Always tell the teacher about any spills, accidents or fire.
Don’t be afraid to tell, it could save someone from injury.

#2 Wear safety goggles. They protect your eyes from chemical spills and from broken glass or foreign objects.

#3 If a splash occurs you should treat your eyes by doing the following: A. removing your contact lense B. washing eyes in a gentle stream of water, holding eyes open with hands (this may take two people) for about 15 minutes C. have your eyes checked by a physician

#4 If a chemical spills on your skin, wash the area with lots of water for at least 10 minutes. For large spills, you may need to remove clothing and shower for several minutes.

#5 If you burn your skin with a hot beaker or fire, you should rinse with cool water and then apply ointment and a bandage from a first aid kit.

#6 If a chemical spills on your clothing, pull off the clothing and wash with water for several minutes.

#7 The fire extinguisher is located in the left front corner of the room next to the window.

#8 The countertops or desktops should be cleaned after using chemicals or other contaminants, even if they appear to be clean, since contamination may not be easily seen.

#9 Before every lab you should: Put on safety goggles
Know the procedures. Read the directions, ask any questions to clarify any steps or procedures you do not understand. Know the chemicals involved and any dangers that might be involved Never fool around. Be serious. No extra, unsupervised experiments should be done

#10 Never eat or drink during a lab because the food may become contaminated.

#11 When smelling something in lab, NEVER put your face over a container and inhale deeply. Hold the container in one hand and wave the other hand over the top of the container.

#12 If acid is spilled on you, wash the area with lots of water for several minutes. If available, rinse with dilute sodium bicarbonate solution ( baking soda in water).

#13 For a base spill, wash with water for several minutes. If available, rinse with dilute boric acid solution and continue rinsing with water.

#14 Never lean over a burner or flame during an experiment. Tie back hair and clothing.

#15 In case of fire, smother the fire with a jacket or piece of clothing. Use the fire blanket. If needed use the fire extinguisher and pull the fire alarm. The fire blanket and fire extinguisher are located in the front left corner of the room, next to the window.

#16 Never use your hands to pick up broken glass. Always use a broom and dustpan.

#17 At the end of every lab, every piece of equipment used should be cleaned, as well as desktops and countertops. Be sure to store all equipment properly. Wash your hands with soap and water.
