1 Bell-Ringer! What can you think is the simplest form of matter in a living being? What can you think is the most complex?

2 Bell-Ringer! The ATOM! The ORGANISM!

3 Getting to know world on the inside!! Mr. Sanders
Welcome to Cells Getting to know world on the inside!! Mr. Sanders

4 Gotta start out small and GET BIGGER!!!!!!
To better understand what is going on, we gotta start out small. And I mean, small!!

5 Quarks?!? NOT THAT SMALL !!!

6 Atoms Atoms are the simplest building block of matter.
From the Greek word “atomon” which means uncutable, indivisible. The structure and theories surrounding atoms would be revised for centuries to come.

7 Elements There are over 118 and COUNTING!!
Elements are the purest form of matter. Elements are composed of only one single type of atom. They can have anywhere from 1 atom to MANY atoms in their pure state There are over 118 and COUNTING!!

8 Compounds & Molecules Compounds are made up of many different elements. Compounds that are chemically bonded together are called molecules. The number of compounds and molecules that can be formed is staggering!

9 Compounds & Molecules A few examples of compounds
Table salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3) Rust (iron(III) oxide, Fe2O3) A few examples of molecules Water (H2O) Sugar (Glucose C6H12O6, Sucrose (table sugar) C12H22O11) Fats Proteins Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The genetic material of living organisms.

10 DNA

11 Cells Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living organisms. They can be simple….. To VERY COMPLEX!

12 Cells Organisms made up of ONE cell: Unicellular
Organisms made up of MORE THAN ONE cell: Multicellular

13 Cells In multicellular organisms, there can be specialized cells that function together to support the organism. Each one has a different function “Division of Labor”

14 Tissues Groups of cells that work together for a specific function are called tissues.

15 Organs Different tissues working together to complete a function are called organs.

16 Organ Systems Organ systems are when groups of organs work together and perform one or more major function.

17 And finally…. THE ORGANISM!!!
