The attack had destroyed/damaged much of the American Pacific Fleet Japan now controlled most of the Pacific, but no U.S. aircraft carriers were destroyed. The US & Allies decide on a Europe First Strategy. Only the Navy would be used in the Pacific.

10 The Battle of Midway Island
This great air and sea battle became the turning point of the war in the Pacific. U.S. planes were able to sink all four of the Japanese aircraft carriers and many other support vessels. This victory reestablish American naval supremacy in the Pacific.

11 “Island Hopping” After Midway the U.S. began liberating areas by “hopping” from island to island. They were heavily defended and included Iwo Jima, Solomon Islands, Saipan, and Guam.

12 Beginning of the End The U.S. Navy had at this point retaken all of the islands in the South Pacific. As a result they were able to set up a naval blockade and cut off the flow of raw materials to Japan Now it was just a matter of determining how to get them to surrender.
