2. Introduction
Education in England is overseen by the Department of education. The aim of this presentation is to give yourselves a flavour of what education is like in England. I wish to present you with an idea of how education is in England; the resources we use and what the result is.

4. Learning resources
Learning resources at NSB are varied and all help to extend student learning. Such resources include two large libraries; up to date graphical design equipment such as laser cutters and CAD/CAM software; computer suites; science laboratories with preparation rooms, gas, water and electrical access; DT machinery; homework help points; clubs and interactive software.

5. Teaching methods
Methods of educating students varies from subject to subject. During practical subjects such as science and design technology students are taught to design, plan and work out the theory of the topic and then go on to perform hands on work and witness demonstrations. In other subjects however the work can be very varied from writing to performing to speaking to class discussion.

8. Secondary education
Secondary education follows primary education and a student generally moves up to this when he/she is eleven years of age. Occasionally in some areas of the country students may attend a middle school up to 13 years of age however this is generally not a common practice. Education is compulsory to the age of 16 at which time a student can choose to carry on at school or attend college or an apprenticeship to the age of 18.

9. GCSE level
GCSE’s or a general certificate of secondary education are examinations commonly undertaken during year 10. the exams are specific to subjects. There are normally 8-10 exams taken in different subjects. GCSE’s are marked and forwarded to other schools a student wishes to attend. They are marked into two tiers. Higher A*-D grade and foundation D and below.

10. A levels
A levels, or GCE Advanced level, follow compulsory secondary education and GCSE. They are optional but are required to take should a student wish to advance to university. The A level results determine whether and to which university a student will be admitted to. They are subject specific. English and maths are compulsory all others are optional. Usually 3-4 are taken.

There are 3 subjects which are taught more than any other. Choose one to find out about:

12. Mathematics
At NSB mathematics is taught 4 times a week with 45 minute lessons. It is normally taught with the teacher explaining the topic and the theory and then assigning tasks to apply the theory to.

13. Science
Science is also taught with 4 lessons a week which are normally broken up into 2 45 minute lessons with one double, 90 minute lessons. During the double lesson normally there is some form of practical work and theory during the two single.

14. English
English is taught with 4 single lessons a week. The lesson is either focused on reading, writing or speaking and units are focused on one of these and are built up on skills in that area.

15. Education system
Primary and Secondary education in England and all of the UK is compulsory and education at this level is open to all, male and female, from the of four up to eighteen. Individuals aged between four and eleven are taught at a primary level whilst eleven to eighteen year olds are taught secondary. During this time everybody will be given a place in a school. We will be exploring secondary education.
