Aim: To provide Trainee Personal Trainers with the skills necessary to conduct detailed screening procedures and suitable and appropriate fitness assessments in a one to one setting.

Session 1 Client Screening
Learning Outcomes: At the end of this session you should be able to: 1. Design an in-depth health/lifestyle screening form and an exercise history and attitude questionnaire 2. Identify contraindications to participation in fitness assessment and exercise programmes

Conduct the initial meeting with a potential client in a professional and sensitive manner Gain the information needed from the client to analyse their needs, set goals and design an effective enjoyable programme

Completed in addition to the screening form to gain detailed information on the client’s Present/past exercise, sport or physical activity habits Attitude to exercise Goals, reasons for using a PT

Uses of the Questionnaire
The information gained from the Ex. History & Attitude questionnaire can be used for: It helps to identify client goals Identifies likes and dislikes in exercise and physical activity and sports Provides information useful for future programming Aids in the selection of suitable fitness tests

Avoidance of repetition of negative experiences It highlights exercise/programme adherence problems Time they have available for exercise and convenient times

Personal Training is a service As such it is intangible i.e. It cannot be examined, held, tested etc prior to purchase Therefore it is a high risk purchase

The potential client has 2 ways to judge the quality of the service prior to purchase A referral from a trusted friend They judge the intangible service by the quality of the tangible materials associated with the service

At the initial meeting these materials include: The trainers dress and manner The quality of the materials Brochures Screening forms Ex. History & Attitude questionnaires etc Ensure your Tangible materials portray a positive image!

Task Pair up with a person you don’t know
One take on the role of the PT and the other the client Conduct the interview using the sample form provided On completion of the interview take 5 mins to collate your data and….
