2 Aims of the session To know what the P Scales and Curriculum Levels mean. To know how your young person is assessed at Kennel Lane School. To clarify your understanding of how your young person’s attainment and progress is reported.

3 We can do this by valuing achievement and developing independence.
Kennel Lane School is aiming to be an outstanding provider of education for learners with special educational needs. We can do this by valuing achievement and developing independence. We can do this by having a creative and imaginative and personalised curriculum. Therefore we need to measure progress in different and imaginative ways. One assessment system does not work. We use various systems to triangulate our data.

4 What are the P Scales and Curriculum Levels?
Key Stages 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 During each of the Key Stages our young people are assessed using the P Scales and Curriculum Levels. P Scales are the form of assessment used before a young person reaches Curriculum Levels. There are eight P Scales for each subject with one being the lowest level and eight being the highest level. Within each scale achievement is also broken down into four sections, a, b, c and d. For example P7d means that a young person has completed approximately 25% of the criteria for a P7 whereas if they have achieved a P7a they have achieved 100% of the criteria for P7 and are now working towards P8.

5 However, when a young person is working lower down on the P Scales from P1 to P4, for certain subject areas, these are again broken down further. For example, P2id. This is because progress within these levels can be small but it is progress and needs to be recorded. On official documents if a young person is on the P Scales they are marked as a ‘W’ which means they are working towards a Curriculum Level 1. There are eight Curriculum Levels starting with Level 1 and ending with Level 8. Similarly to the P Scales each Curriculum Level is currently divided into sections, a, b and c. For example 2c means that a young person has completed approximately 33% of the criteria for a Curriculum Level 2 whereas if they have achieved a 2a they have achieved 80% of the criteria for a Curriculum Level 2 and are now working towards a Curriculum Level 3.

6 An example Oliver Rose is currently at 42% of P7 for English Reading.
Oliver has therefore achieved a P7d but is working at a P7c. The nearest whole P Scale Oliver has achieved for Reading is P6. Until a young person is working at the top of the Scale or Curriculum Level they have not achieved it.

7 The EYFS Curriculum Learners’ progress is measured in the following categories as part of the EYFS Curriculum; Mathematics Literacy Physical Development Communication and Language Personal, Social and Emotional Development Understanding the world Expressive Arts and Design Learners’ progress is measured by age related learning categories; 0-11 months 8-20 months 16-26 months 22-36 months 30-50 months 40-60 months

8 The Curriculum The Curriculum is assessed using a variety of different methods due to our young people’s option choices. Some subjects will continue to be assessed using the P Scales and Curriculum Levels, including, English, Math and Science. Some subjects that were compulsory in Key Stages 1, 2 and 3 are now optional and are no longer assessed for those young people who have not opted for them. Options subjects are assessed against the criteria of the relevant awarding body (Exam Board).

13 P7 English Reading (Page 3) – Learners show an interest in the activity of reading. They predict elements of a narrative, for example, when the adult stops reading learners fill in the missing word. They distinguish between print or symbols and pictures in text. They understand the conventions of reading, for example, following text left to right, top to bottom and page following page. They know that their name is made up of letters.
