2. Aims of the National Curriculum
‘Children should be taught to read easily and fluently…to read with good understanding.’
‘Children should develop the habit of reading widely and often, for pleasure and information.’
‘Children should appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.’
‘Children should acquire a wide vocabulary.’
Children should be able to discuss, elaborate and explain their understanding and ideas, be competent in the arts of speaking and listening, participating in debate.’

3. Primary School Reading Scheme
Books from Level 1 to Level 12 are organised on the shelves in the Reading Area. The Reading Scheme is structured, books are levelled and gradually become more challenging over time
To start with, pupils follow the Read Write Inc. Phonics scheme by Ruth Miskin, as well as the Oxford Reading Tree, Ginn 360 and Big Cat books, which are all very phonic based.
Pupils progress to the next level when they are ready. At each level there is a broad range of books, from a variety of schemes, including fiction, non-fiction, playscripts and poetry books.

4. Pre-school
In Pre-school, pupils are taught one letter sound per week, using the large letter cards (Read Write Inc.) and many stories, songs and displays are based around this letter sound
Pupils listen to stories, look at picture books, sing rhymes
Pupils attend a weekly library session – a story/puppet show

5. Reception
Pupils progress to Set 1 and Set 2 RWI Phonics Speed Sound Cards, learning a new sound and letter(or group) every day
Pupils are taught to read and spell the High Frequency words (red and green flashcards)
Pupils begin the Reading Scheme, taking home a reading book, a pack of sound cards
Pupils read to the teacher or teaching assistant daily
Pupils attend a weekly library session

6. Year 1 and Year 2 Set 3 sounds are taught, and High Frequency words
Revision of Set 1 and Set 2 sounds.
Pupils continue to follow the Reading Scheme, pupils read to teacher or teaching assistant daily
Pupils are introduced to written comprehension
Pupils attend a weekly library session

7. Year 3 and Year 4 Pupils follow a class reading book
Pupils may have a Guided Reading session
Pupils complete written comprehension exercises
Pupils continue to follow the Reading Scheme and read 2-3 times each week to the teacher or teaching assistant
Pupils attend a weekly library session

8. Year 5 and Year 6
Most pupils are expected to reach Level 12 in or by Year 6. Some pupils become a ‘Free Reader’ (reading beyond Level 12) and are able to choose their reading book from the Library
Pupils follow a class reading book
Pupils may have Guided Reading groups
Pupils complete weekly comprehension exercises
Pupils read to the teacher on a weekly basis, twice weekly or as necessary
Pupils attend a weekly library lesson, change/renew books, the lessons support the English scheme
