Confederates wanted people (supporters) to consider the Civil War as another war for independence (this time from the Union, instead of Britain). Answer in a thoughtful paragraph - Why would they make that comparison? Consider Jefferson’s ideas about power and government in the Declaration of Independence, and compare advantages of the Confederates to those of the Continental Army.

Thursday, April 20 Copy the information about the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments into your spiral. 13th - Freed all slaves in America 14th - Gave former slaves citizenship in the United States. Also offered a way to restore citizenship to former Confederates 15th - Guaranteed the Right to Vote to former slaves. Why were these amendments necessary? (Hint – think about Dred Scott and what was happening in the South during Reconstruction.)

KEY Dred Scott v. Sanford ruled that slaves were property, and that the Missouri Compromise and anyother Congressional attempts at abolition were unconstitutional because they deprived people of property. That’s why the 13th Amendment was needed – to abolish slavery everywhere. It also ruled that slaves were not citizens with the right to sue or vote, so the 14th Amendment was needed to give them citizenship. The 15th Amendment was needed because even after giving freedmen citizenship (including right of citizens to vote), Southern states passed Black Codes and Jim Crow laws to stop them.

13 -“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.” 14 - “All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. ” “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
