Virginia was very successful in Jamestown

3. When was your colony established
Virginia was established on June 25th in 1788

4. Why was your colony established
The founding of virginia in 1606 a group of wealthy london businessmen petitioned king James for chapter to establish a colony in New World. the y formed the Virginia company and set out to establish a permanent English settlement in the Americas.

5. Who (founder or land owner) established your colony
The Virginia Company of England made a daring proposition: sail to the new mysterious island, which they called Virginia in honor of Elizabeth I,the Virgin Queen and began a settlement. They established Jamestown, Virginia on May 14th, 1607, the first permanent British settlement in North America.

6. What did your colony produce to export and make money
Virginia produced Wheat, flax, tobacco, corn and iron.

7. Colonists
Gender roles had women being non educated and their role was to take care of the house when their husbands’ were working.
Social Ranking was all based around the man’s reputation
African American men, women, and their children were slaves to the families with land.

8. Government Constitutional monarchy
Governor, Thomas Dale, had Virginia under “Dale’s Codes”
Had Capital punishment, governed somewhat by soldiers, ect.

The man in the blue represents the stepping upon tyranny by being on top of the king whose crown has fallen.
The “Sic Semper Tyrannis” means “thus always to tyrants”

12. John Smith
The founder of Virginia in 1607 was John Smith. He was an English soldier, author, and explorer. A quote that he said stated, “He that will not work shall not eat.” Smith had to return to England after being injured by an explosion of gunpowder.

Excellent land for farming due to the rich soil and tidewater
Rivers, Bays and wetlands
The climate was warm and damp which also led to allowing the settlers to have long growing season

14. Religion Law mandated Virginians worship in the Anglican Church
Virginians are not tolerant of non-christian religions
White women were primary guardians of family religious life

15. Foods Equally known for its hams and peanuts.
When settlers learned the indians art of smoking meats, Virginia country hams began to earn an international reputation

No public schools, no school buses, no school boards, no department of education
Book learning was not a priority in colonial Virginia
Took 11 years after arriving at Jamestown for the English to establish the first public school
The “College of Henricus” was charted in 1618~ intended to educate both colonists and Native Americans, as part of the colonial policy to assimilate them into English culture.
