3 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.

4 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.
Ciliated Epithelium Cell- Has hairs (cilia) which 'waft' to trap dirt and germs

5 Think about these in your pairs
Answers at the end

11 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.

12 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.
Red Blood Cell-disc shaped to carry oxygen around the body

13 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.
Palisade Leaf Cell- Filled with green chloroplasts to get energy from sunlight.

14 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.
Nerve Cell- long, thin and 'wire-like' to send messages around the body

15 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.
Root Hair Cell- Hair-like projection to absorb water

16 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.
Sperm Cell- Tail to help it swim to the egg cell

17 Describe the cell's shape and how it helps it do it job.
Egg Cell- large and surrounded by food for the baby to grow

18 Specialised cells

19 Cheek cells Materials Glass microscope slides Plastic cover slips
Paper towels or tissue Methylene Blue solution (0.5% to 1% (mix approximately 1 part stock solution with 4 parts of water)) Plastic pipette or dropper Sterile, individually packed cotton swabs Methods Take a clean cotton swab and gently scrape the inside of your mouth. Smear the cotton swab on the centre of the microscope slide for 2 to 3 seconds. Add a drop of methylene blue solution and place a coverslip on top. Concentrated methylene blue is toxic if ingested. Wear gloves and do NOT allow students to handle methylene blue solution or have access to the bottle of solution. Remove any excess solution by allowing a paper towel to touch one side of the coverslip. Place the slide on the microscope, with 4 x or 10 x objective in position and find a cell. Then view at higher magnification. Human Cheek Cell Methylene blue stains negatively charged molecules in the cell, including DNA and RNA. This dye is toxic when ingested and it causes irritation when in contact with the skin and eyes. The cells seen are squamous epithelial cells from the outer epithelial layer of the mouth. The small blue dots are bacteria from our teeth and mouth.

20 Types of cell: Palisade cell Sperm cell Root hair cell Cone cell
Create this table in your book: Image Name of cell Function Adaptations Types of cell: Palisade cell Sperm cell Root hair cell Cone cell Fat cell

21 Take in water and minerals
Image Name of cell Function Adaptations Fat cell Storing energy as fat Few mitochondria Not much cytoplasm Lots of fat Root hair cell Take in water and minerals Large surface area Large permanent vacuole Cone cell Colour vision Contains light sensitive pigment Lots of mitochondria Special synapse Sperm cell Swim to an egg Long tail Digestive enzymes Large nucleus Palisade cell Photosynthesis Lots of chloroplasts
