We have had an unprecedented level of sickness of staff (or of immediate family) in the School.
I think we are through the worst of this but the ramifications are still being felt. Other staff have had to take on extra work (sometimes at very short notice) and I have been very grateful for this.

Research Excellence Framework (REF)
This was submitted at the end of last year Prof Brent Murray was our lead academic and was responsible for writing our submission Results will start to come out mid-December, 2014 Research ‘Impact’ was the new issue that we had to deal with Fingers crossed!

Student Numbers

Some places at the Russell Group of leading Universities were left empty this year because of the Governments higher education reforms, a vice-chancellor has said. Sir Howard Newby, from the University of Liverpool, said it was an ‘unintended consequence’ of the overhaul of the university sector, and warned that ‘there could be a further round of empty places next year’. (slide from last year’s meeting)

We did well, exceeding target again A lot of Russell Group Universities went into ‘clearing’ for at least some subjects (FS&N didn’t) Next year, our BSc Nutrition will be AAB Next year, no quotas at all – the government has removed the limit on students with less than ABB

League Tables League tables are now very important
1st: The Guardian (2015) – to Nottingham 2nd: The Complete University Guide (2015) – to KCL We are waiting for the Times/Sunday Times table due out soon – we were 1st in one, 2nd in the other last year We are one of only 2 Schools in the University in the top 3 in their subject areas

Student Recruitment Activity
University Open Days: we now do 4 Saturday and 1 Friday Open Day. Around 60 students per day There is 1 Post-graduate Open Day School Post-applicant Days – we do 5 of these Summer School – a 2-day residential course for 36 students School visits/events, brochures, the web International visits

Visit to China 2014 I travelled to the city of Zhenjiang in Jiangsu Province to visit Jiangsu University I travelled to Huangzhou in Zhejiang Province to visit 3 Universities in the city of Hangzhou

Visit to China April 2014 Re-visiting the ‘2+2’ with Jiangsu University (Zhenjiang) – hopefully will be agreed by the end of May for 2014 recruitment to the 1st year in China Research collaboration with Zheijiang Gongshan University Zheijiang University of Technology want a ‘2+2’ agreement China Jilang University want to send students I would like to explore a closer arrangement with a single University covering research and teaching; there must be a common vision with Leeds Jiangsu are going to propose a closer collaboration
