Literacy & Math Night at Military Trail
Primary math Literacy & Math Night at Military Trail
2
Tonight’s Goal: To help you support your child’s math needs at home
3
Our Plan for Tonight: Games (How do games help your kids?)
Word Problems (How can you help your child with these frightening beasts?) Using the Success Criteria & Exemplary Solutions
4
Why play games? Games provide multisensory support. Example: Cards are tactile, pattern-based Extra Repetition: Facts present themselves repeatedly in games Variety: Allows the Same Thing to Look New Students can learn facts without getting bored; dice, domino and card games can be adapted in multiple ways
5
How can you help at home? Play games in the car (basic math facts, drills) Do sorting activities (clothing, socks, cutlery, etc.) Bake or Cook together (measuring, fractions, procedural reading) Board games
6
Games we love… Connect Four (spatial sense, problem-solving)
Checkers/ Chess (problem-solving & patterning) Monopoly/Life (Addition/ Subtraction skills) Snakes and Ladders (Counting Forward & Backward) Rubik’s Cube (Spatial Sense) Blokus (Spatial Sense, Geometry) Card Games Cribbage (Number Sense) Pig Out (Addition) Yahtzee (Addition) Backgammon (Number Sense/ Spatial Sense)

An example of a “Beastly” word problem: (note our connection to social studies; problems done in class generally have some cross-curricular connection or a relevant topic to students ) When the Early Settlers arrived in Canada from Europe, they were taught how to fish the Canadian waters by the First Nations Peoples. Some of settlers would wake up at 5:30 a.m. and fish until 8:30 a.m They would catch about 4 fish each hour. How many fish would they catch each day, and how long did they spend fishing? How many fish would they catch in a week?

Accountable Talk When solving word problems, students are often grouped into partnerships. We want our students to put these steps into practice whether working with a partner or are his/her own: Read and think about the problem a minimum of two times. Simplify the problem. (Highlight key numbers, Draw a box around key words, Underline the question.) Represent the problem using illustrations/ pictures. Show all calculations. Explain their solution using math language. (Include an explanation of the strategy, RAS and vocabulary used in class. Example: Multiplication; words like array, repeated addition, product, etc.)

Website Reminder: Just a reminder that the gr.3 teachers have a website filled with relevant material we cover in class, activities, and educational websites for literacy and numeracy. Go to: Then, click on the name of the teacher’s site you wish to see. *There is no need to login. It is free access for all.
