3. Maths Number and Place Value
The key objectives for Year 3 are:
Number and Place Value
I can count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 50 and 100.
I can find 10 or 100 more or less than a given number.
I can solve number and practical problems that involve comparing and ordering numbers with increasingly large positive numbers up to Addition and Subtraction
I can add and subtract numbers mentally, including a three-digit number and ones, a three-digit number and tens and a three-digit number and hundreds.
I can add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods of column addition and subtraction, multiplication and division
I can recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.
I can write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that I know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit number, using mental strategies and formal written methods.
Fractions (Decimals & Percentages)
I can count up and down in tenths; I can recognise that tenths arise from dividing an object into 10 equal parts and in dividing one-digit numbers or quantities by 10
I can recognise, find and write fractions of a discrete set of objects: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators.
I can recognise and use fractions as numbers: unit fractions and non-unit fractions with small denominators
Measurement
I can measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g); volume/capacity (l/ml)
I can add and subtract amounts of money to give change, using both £ and p in practical contexts.

I can identify right angles, recognise that two right angles make a half-turn, three make three quarters of a turn and four a complete turn.

4. English The key objectives for Year 3 are: Reading
I can read further exception words including words that do not follow spelling patterns.
I can work out what a character in a book is feeling by the actions they take and can explain how I know.
I can use non-fiction texts to find out information on a subject .
I can predict what might happen from clues in what I have read.
I can listen to and discuss a wide range of fiction and non-fiction texts.
With support I can use a dictionary to check the meaning of words that I have read.
With support I can identify the features and genres of a wide range of text.
Every child will read with their class teacher weekly and develop these skills through Guided Reading.

5. English Writing Composition
I can use paragraphs to organise my writing so that blocks of texts group related material.
I can draft and write non-fiction texts such as instructions using headings and subheadings to organise my work
I can proof read my work by reading it aloud and make improvements to grammar, punctuation and vocabulary
Grammar, punctuation and vocabulary
I can talk about time, place and cause using conjunctions, adverbs and prepositions
I can use the present perfect form of verbs, instead of the simple past e.g. ‘He has gone out to play’, contrasted with ‘He went out to play’
I can use inverted commas to punctuate direct speech
Children will learn and practise these skills through English lessons and in discrete spelling and handwriting lessons.

6. Homework
Maths and English homework will be given out on a Monday. This needs to be returned by Friday.
Spellings will also go out on a Monday to learn for the following Monday.
Children are expected to read on a daily basis – please sign their reading record.
Extra resources will also be available on the school website by the half term holiday. This will replace holiday homework which will not be set.

7. PE
Swimming This will take place every Monday for the whole term. Please practise changing with your child at home and ensure they have all necessary equipment on a Monday. Please ensure children have spare socks and underwear and all their clothing is labelled. PE 3CH – Tuesday and Wednesday 3W – Wednesday 3SN – Thursday The kits are to be kept in school – we will send them home at half term/if they get dirty. Earrings will need to be removed for P.E lessons and swimming.

8. Healthy Eating
In Year 3, children can bring in a healthy snack from home for morning break. This should not be items such as crisps, biscuits, cakes and chocolate.
Packed lunches should also include healthy foods.

9. Drop off and Collection
Please encourage your child to be independent by dropping them off at the KS2 school gate. This will be supervised from 8.40 by a member of staff.
We encourage you to collect your child from the KS2 playground at the end of the day. Children need to come back to the teacher if they are unable to see you. We will wait until all children are collected.

10. Promoting Independence
Children are encouraged to be more independent during year 3:
They are responsible for their own belongings – please help by ensuring they are named.
Children are trusted to change their own reading books on designated days.
Children need to remember to place lunch boxes on the trolley first thing in the morning and collect at the end of the day.
Please encourage your child to tell us about any worries they have during the school day.

11. Communication We are here to work with you to best support your child.
For any brief messages, we will be available at the end of the day on the school playground.
If you would like a longer conversation, please make an appointment via the school office.

12. Communication Your opinions matter!
Our staff team are committed to providing the best possible provision for your child/dren. If you are not entirely satisfied with this, please talk to your child's class teacher in the first instance. If we have done something well, we'd love to know!
Please remember that school staff are humans too. All we ask is for this to be respected both in our face to face conversations and on social media.
