Key Stage 2 Tests 2017 – meeting for parents

Test Week – 8th to 11th May Talk through timings, moderation which has already taken place – reading 60 mins, grammar 45, spelling 15, arith 30, reasoning papers 40

Your children will be the second set of pupils to take the new tests
Your children will be the second set of pupils to take the new tests. SATs have been overhauled in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to reflect the changes to the National Curriculum, which was introduced from September 2014. Greater focus on depth of learning, tests are culmination of what is learnt throughout primary
4
Scaled cores Used for reporting National Curriculum test outcomes
Scaled scores help test results to be reported consistently and maintain meaning over time Children achieve a raw score in their test – this is converted to a scaled score ‘100’ represents the expected standard Raw score total number of correct responses, consistency
5
Reporting scaled scores
Raw score will be translated to scaled score using a conversion table Pupils will receive a raw score, scaled score and confirmation of attainment of the national standard Last year’ results showed that, nationally, 53% of Year 6 children achieved the ‘expected standard’ in reading , writing and maths – these results reflect how challenging it is for pupils to achieve the expected standard Chdn have had 3 years teaching of the new curriculum, within school we are working at ensuring chdn are as well prepared as possible
6
Reading One paper lasting an hour which consists of 3-4 unrelated texts of increasing difficulty Children will read a range of texts including poetry, fiction and non-fiction There are a range of questions Question types, spelling lists
7
One mark
9
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar
Paper 1 focuses on knowledge of grammatical terminology and punctuation In Paper 2 children are tested on their knowledge of spelling patterns and words taught in the National Curriculum Year 3-6
10
Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic
Assesses basic mathematical calculations No contextualised questions 36 questions, 40 marks, 30 minutes Covers calculations involving all four operations (children should use mental and written methods) More complex calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages Straightforward sums/calcs, recognition of most efficient method due to time
11
Mathematics Paper 2 & 3 : reasoning
Contextualised questions which require the need to draw on and apply number knowledge Questions cover problem solving, reasoning and are based around a wide range of mathematical areas – number, algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. Straightforward sums/calcs – missing number problems, organising numbers into venns, recognition of most efficient method due to time
12
Teacher Assessment As well as receiving test results, you children will also receive ‘Teacher Assessment’ for reading, writing and maths. These assessments are based on ‘performance descriptors’. These are a set of statements related to the curriculum your children have covered.
13
Teacher Assessment In reading and maths there are two categories for teacher assessment: Working below age related expectations Working at age related expectations For writing the performance descriptors are broken down into 4 categories: Working towards age related expectations Working at a greater depth than age related expectations To achieve the expected standard a child must CONSISTENTLY show evidence of ALL performance descriptors. Cross curricular evidence, no best fit
14
How can you help? Ensure your child has the best possible attendance
Support your child with homework tasks Reading at home, spelling and times tables practice are always useful things to cover Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and about the books they are reading Useful websites years/mental-maths Encourage talk about understanding/learning
15
Revision Books Sample papers CGP £1.60 Achieve 100 plus Rising Stars
