Your body contains billions of them which are found in multiples locations in your body.
When HIV enters the blood, it invades certain cells of the immune system which help identify and destroy pathogens.
The virus takes over the cell & reproduces.
As the # of viruses increases, the immune system because less capable of preventing infections & cancer.
Body is susceptible to infections & opportunistic infections (infections that occur in individuals who have weak immune systems.)

HIV destroys cells of the immune system over many months & years. Being infected with HIV does not mean necessarily that a person has AIDS. AIDS is the advanced stage of the HIV infection.
