Okinawa- island 350 miles from Japan was invaded U.S. lost 12,000 men. Island would serve as a staging area for the invasion of Japan. Japanese would not surrender had to kill them all. Invasion of main land would cost millions of lives on both sides.

Manhattan Project- code name for the program that built the atomic bomb. Program was led by Gen. Leslie Groves and physicist Robert Oppenheimer. Truman felt it was his duty to use every weapon available to save American lives Allies threatened Japan with “utter destruction” wanted them to surrender
