Progression model of the two types of endometrial carcinoma. The development of endometrioid carcinoma (EC) from normal epithelium (NE) arises over time through a series of hyperplastic lesions that increase in both architectural complexity and cytologic atypia from simple hyperplasia (SH) to complex hyperplasia (CH) and finally complex atypical hyperplasia (CAH). Uterine serous carcinoma (SC) develops in the setting of atrophic endometrium (AE) from a precursor lesion called endometrial intraepithelial carcinoma (EIC).
