1 Welcome to the Year 3 and Year4 maths workshop

2 Curriculum expectations for end of Year 3
Addition and Subtraction Add and subtract numbers mentally, including: a three-digit number and ones a three-digit number and tens a three-digit number and hundreds Add and subtract numbers with up to three digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction

3 Curriculum expectations for end of Year 3
Multiplication and Division Recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables Write and calculate mathematical statements for multiplication and division using the multiplication tables that they know, including for two-digit numbers times one-digit numbers, using mental and progressing to formal written methods

4 Curriculum expectations for end of Year 4
Addition and Subtraction Add and subtract numbers with up to 4 digits using the formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction where appropriate. Estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to a calculation

5 Curriculum expectations for end of Year 4
Multiplication and Division recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12 Multiply two-digit and three-digit numbers by a one-digit number using formal written layout.

6 What can you do at home to help?
Half termly KIRFS. If you don’t have a copy please ask your child’s class teacher. Times tables – repetition and recall Allow your child to teach you – Let them become the experts by explaining

7 Adding two 2-digit numbers without exchange
Using base 10 Open up your accompanying calculation document.

8 Adding two 2-digit numbers with exchange
Using base 10

9 Subtracting without exchange

10 Subtracting with exchange
Using base 10

11 Multiplication TU x U using grid method HTU x U using grid method

12 TU ÷ U (no remainder)

13 TU ÷ U (with remainder)

14 Addition and subtraction
Year 4 Children will continue to consolidate their use of standard column addition. They will progress to adding numbers with 2 decimal places in the context of money. Integers may have up to 4 digits. Children will continue to consolidate their use of decomposition for subtraction. They are to be introduced to calculations where they must complete two exchanges as the next column has 0. Integers may have up to 4 digits.

15 Short multiplication Introduced in Year 4 TU x U

16 Division Year 4 Children consolidate their application of short division, dividing 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers, including remainders.

17 Any Questions Have a go at some of these methods with your child as the teacher.
