4 POTENTIAL SYNDROME EXPECTED AND HIGHLIGHTED AT THESE INDUSTRIES CONT.

5 SHOULDER WRIST BACK HAND FINGERS
BODY PARTS AFFECTED SHOULDER WRIST BACK HAND FINGERS

6 CAUSES OF SUCH SYNDROMES
THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME Anterior scalene (C3, 4, 5, 6 to first rib) tightness or hypertrophy Costoclavicular approximation Pectoralis minor (3rd, 4th, and 5th ribs to coracoid process) tightness CARPAL TURNAL SYNDROME Pressure: The nerve has little padding over it.  Direct pressure (like leaning the arm on an arm rest) can press the nerve, causing the arm and hand — especially the ring and small fingers — to “fall asleep.”   Stretching:  Keeping the elbow bent for a long time can stretch the nerve behind the elbow.  This can happen during sleep. Anatomy:  Sometimes, the ulnar nerve does not stay in its place and snaps back and forth over a bony bump as the elbow is moved.  Repeated snapping can irritate the nerve. Sometimes, the soft tissues over the nerve become thicker or there is an “extra” muscle over the nerve that can keep it from working correctly.

7 CAUSES OF SUCH SYNDROMES CONT.
TRIGGER FINGER Repetitive Strain Injury Repetitive overuse of the fingers in activities that result in the "excessive" use of the fingers in any activities that require finger flexion. This can range from typing to driving. Direct Trauma Trigger Finger is often the result of direct injury to the tendon via micro-tears resulting from blunt trauma that cause immediate micro-tears in the flexor tendon(s). SHOUDER BURSITIS An injury, such as a fall Bacterial infection Overuse of the shoulder, such as when you paint or swim Bony growths that rub against and irritate the bursa and tendon

8 CAUSES OF SUCH SYNDROMES
DEQUEVAIN’S DISEASE (UNKNOWN) Direct injury to your wrist or tendon; scar tissue as a result of healing can restrict movements Inflammatory arthritis, like rheumatoid arthritis HERNIATED DISC (LOWER BACK) Lifting heavy things improperly Injury Aging Spontaneous overweight

9 Predisposing factors (Risk Factors and other variables)
1 TOS Static posture Arms overhead for long periods of time 2 CARPAL TURNAL SYNDROME Prolonged elbow flexion and extension Resting elbow on hard surfaces 3 TRIGGER FINGER Middle aged adults, especially women Repetitive gripping of objects associated with certain occupations Chronic inflammatory disorder (rheumatoid arthritis)

10 Predisposing factors (Risk Factors and other variables)
4 DEQUEVAIN’S DISEASE Repetitive movement of the hand Twisting of the wrist Use of force while handling objects with hands 5 HERNIATED DISC (LOWER BACK) Repetitive lifting, pulling, pushing, bending sideways and twisting 6 SHOULDER BURSITIS work or hobby requires repetitive motion or pressure on particular bursae
